Anyone been to Stanford Bipolar Disorders Clinic?

Posted by inanimate peanut on December 26, 2009, at 16:05:42

Apparently Dr. Ketter and Dr. Wang are 2 of the top researchers in the Bipolar Disorders field so I set up a one-time consult with them at Stanford. With air fare, hotel, shuttle to/from the airport, etc., it's going to cost quite alot. But, I had to try something different as my doc and I are out of options. I really don't think they'll be able to come up with anything new though. I'm worried that I'm just wasting my money, but I had to give something a shot, right? Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else had gone to Stanford's Bipolar Disorders Clinic?

That sounds like a great opportunity. Have you asked them whether they would consider doing a phone consultation instead of making you fly out there?

I don't think they do. I wasn't smart enough to ask that, though. I already have my non-refundable plane ticket, so that's that I guess. I just hope they'll have some new ideas. But, between my doc, my research, and the med board, no one can think of anything, so I'm becoming more and more pessimistic!

Dr. Ketter is really good with using mood stabilizers in treatment resistant bipolar disorder. I am not familiar with Dr. Wang.

What happens when you combine Parnate, lithium, and Lamictal?

I can understand your pessimism. I am pretty much in the same position that you are. My doctor has temporarily run out of ideas for drug treatments, and so have I. I am adding Effexor this week. My resulting treatment regime will be:

Effexor 300mg
nortriptyline 150mg
Lamictal 150mg
Abilify 10mg

Depending on how I respond, I might revisit a few other drugs that did not help when used in other combinations. Also, there is rTMS. Don't forget to ask Dr. Ketter about it. He might still be in contact with Dr. Mark George. They worked together in the 1990s at the NIMH, NIH while I was a research patient there. Dr. George is one of the early investigators of rTMS.

Good luck with your consultation.

What is rTMS? Is it a medication?

rTMS stands for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. It is a relatively new treatment for depression that involves using a strong magnetic flux to stimulate brain cells to produce a current. I guess you can call it ECT using magnets instead of electricity.

Stanford must be a really good hospital I've heard of others going there also. Phillipa

There seems like a long wait there - 5 to 7 months. And I've never been a big fan of Stanford. Have any of you heard of Dr. Sachs's bipolar clinic at Harvard/MGH? I was thinking of going there, it's more expensive than Stanford's but also a lot bigger.

Really don't think the two I know of had that long a wait. Where's the other clinic? Phillipa
