Hydroquinone - anyone have any experienc using it?

Posted by TexasChic on September 24, 2009, at 21:25:42

I found a product with 2% hydroquinone for about 4 bucks. I've always wanted to try to get rid of all the freckles/sun spots on my face. I have very pale skin with some splotchy freckles. I've always wished I had clear smooth skin. Has anyone ever tried this product?

Yup. I try to remember to use it every night. Many years ago, I used to not protect my face all so well outdoors, and now at the ancient age of 50 (!) I really don't care for the brownish-blotches I see on my cheeks, forehead and nose. I guess they are kinda like big freckles running together... My family says they never even noticed, that it's just the color of my skin, but I notice.

I think it works. I'd say you have to be really patient, though. It's a slow process. I've been remembering most nights for about 6 weeks and I do see gradual fading. Every other time I'd buy the dang stuff and start using it, then forget for weeks on end and end up trashing it months later. Scatter-brained, not too good at forming new habits :-) So I've never used it for the full time they recommend. It smells a bit yucky, but for a fairly cheap product (as facial things go) it does seem to work, ever-so-slowly!

Long answer!!

It's sun damage as have it also 50 ancient l0der? Heah watch it jk as I'm 63. I didn't have luck even with demotologist product think a peel professionally done might be the safest and least expensive in the long run. Did you know that the superficial isn't just superficial the sun now is know to change the DNA of the skin and goes really deep. It's not just for looks anymore. Remember the baby oil for more sun? Well, I couldn't care less about that...but maybe it will come in handy to know for the future :-) And I don't know about TC's, but mine are too big and weird looking to be called freckles....

I like freckles. On kids, on *other* people, and even on me if they actually look anything like freckles, and not spreading blotches (aka age spots?)

I take freckles & age spots (have both) any day over lines & wrinkles (have both).

At 62 I guess what can I expect, but 'we are NOT amused'.

I don't know if I have wrinkles or not! Seriously - I never notice or even look. I guess smile and laugh lines, but not too much else yet. Just give me another decade or so, right? ;-)

I don't mind the brown thingies on forearms, etc., just like all the other weird skin-things (tags, bumps, etc.) middle-aged skin springs on you! lol. I'm quite grateful they are benign and not even precancerous. But on my face, it's kinda annoying as I have faithfully used sunscreen there for over 20 years and generally my facial skin is in good shape except for these darn blotches...

Guess some of us we can't escape from the sun exposure of teen-aged years and early 20's....

My father had so many tags and so do I. I have the ones that rub clothing or get stuck in hair brushes removed, but that still leaves a lot.

I'm too fat to wrinkle much. But I have tiny red dots all over me now. I'm actually considering using a foundation in my old age, which makes me want to cry. Used to be my smooth tan skin was one of my very few good features.

Yeah, I have a bunch more of those red dots, too. One I've had on my neck for about 10 years. Lol - my friends's son, who is now 17, when he was about 11 or 12, used to call me "bloodneck" and laugh hysterically. It was such a boy-thing. Now little Sarah (gd) just says, "Gwamma, why you have dat owie on your neck every day? It can't get better? I sorry."

I guess kids tend to notice anything different, no matter how tiny. It's only less than the size of the head of a pin, and I can make it fade away a lot with a little dusting of powder...

I could do without tags, unexplained dots, etc., I mean really, women have plenty of "challenges" during this stage of life as it is, must our skin go wild, too?

But, like so many others, skin is a weirdly wonderful organ, I suppose.

~ ~ LOL yup, I guess. Although some people have very smooth skin even when they're quite old! (Quite old has shifted upwards as I get older myself!!) ~ ~

~ ~ yes - that would be frustrating when you've taken good care of your facial skin, from the sound of it. ~ ~

~ ~ When I was a teen, the thing-to-do was to put suntan oil on & bask in the sun!!! Just Think what it was doing to our skin!

Aren't those red dots weird?! I have one right on my eyelid!

It's hard facing body changes that we don't like as we age, I think.

I like my eyes, but the top part of my eyelids - between my eyebrows & my eye - are quite sunken. At first it was only one! But now at least they match.

Wow! So many responses, I didn't expect that! Yes, mine are more splotchy than true freckles, although not true age spots either like my Mom has removed at the Dermatologist. I don't mind the true freckles - they kind of add character.

I also have the tiny red dots! My doctor told me that was due to my Irish, or maybe it was German, decent (is that how you spell 'decent' or is it spelled differently from 'half way decent'?). My shoulders have HUGE splotchys that I hate!!! Why its concentrated on my shoulders I don't know.

I would love to have a peel. Can you have one done for your entire body? Alas, I can't even afford one for my face, but a person can dream.

-T

P.S. And yes, I did the baby oil thing too.

It's descent, the word you are thinking of.... :-)

I tell my granddaughter the red dots are mad little red blood cells, who might jump out of my skin and BITE HER!! Lol - it's okay, I'm not mean or cruel really- Sarah is a savvy 2 1/2 year old who has lived around adults playing jokes and teasing all her life...she just looks at me like I'm nuts and says, "No they're not! Gwamma! You are goking me, aren't you?" (yeah, she has trouble with that "J" letter....so jungle is "gungle" - love that)

Yes - some chemical peels would be helpful, but alas, I can't spend my $$ on that, either...

Sorry you think I'm making a big deal out of them. I didn't think so. I was just chatting about it with the others.

I don't think I can bollock you. I never did that before, that I knew of! I think you are saying I'm talking nonsense, and I should be insulted or something....but I'm not :-) It's a great word, a noun, an adjective, a verb....

I get they are age spots, I guess. Although it doesn't really make medical sense to say that. They are really sun damage. Just take till older ages to show themselves. I think I can lighten them if i want to. If it doesn't work, that's okay, too. Believe me, I hardly make a big deal out of anything to do with my appearance. When you are quite overweight, for me anyways, you don't ever feel so awfully good about your body, and so there are just some simpler things than losing weight you do sometimes...to feel a bit better.....maybe as a distraction...

I think a lot of woman like to try creams and things, here and there. Maybe some men, too? No big deal.

I'm glad you get to talk to beautiful women film stars, covered in brown spots that they don't mind...they must be really secure.... ;-)

Manic, I would never shoot you!!

Yo Manic - we didn't KNOW about it when we were 20!!! As to the film stars - they don't make a big deal of it because they have masses of $$$ to do whatever they want to remove OR add whatever they want to whatEVER part of their bodies!! LOL

Kath

PS - In my opinion (my opinionated opinion though) society doesn't put nearly as much pressure on guys to look a certain way as it does on females. I know there's some pressure on guys, but I think there's not nearly as much as there is on women. Hence us making a big deal of it!!

:-)
