Anyone had an mri?

Posted by AuntieMel on January 22, 2009, at 11:34:11

What should I expect?

I've had two. You like down on a bed type thing and it glides back into the machine itself. Kinda like a little tunnel. When I had mine, 2001, it was noisy, like a washing machine. It does take awhile.

You must be very, very still. They will talk to you occasionally. It can be claustrophobic, but not bad.

Thanks. I'm a bit nervous about the holding still part.

It isn't that hard to lie still after you get used to the inside of the machine. Just be prepared for that noise, unless they have improved that.

Yep, I had an MRI just recently. To help you, the general rule seems to be taking a benzo beforehand if you are really bothered. Any luck with that?

I think they have at least some open MRI's now. Which is less claustrophobic. I've had either one or two. (I can't remember if the second was CAT scan or MRI.) I'm terrible at being still but I don't remember anyone being upset with me, so it must not have been an issue. I remember it being a bit uncomfortable and scary, but not nearly so bad as a dental cleaning. The worst part for me was knowing that they could probably tell me what they saw, if they were only allowed. Seems that they could at least give hints. So that was what was mostly on my mind, if I remember correctly. Although my memory is admittedly lousy.

I hope that everything turns up negative.

Hi Mel I've had a few they aren't bad is it with or without contrast? They do give you earplugs to drown out some of the clicky noises. Babblemail me I'll tell you more as have questions about our similar experience last winter. Love Jan/Phillipa

Many

You lie down and do nothing whatever, except put up with a constant racket, and since you've been doing this (at least on and off) for years, it will be easy.

Mine was several years ago as well, it was kind of surreal. I found myself thinking, "This is what it would be like to be abducted by aliens". I also thought it sounded like techno music after a while. Since they were looking at my jaw, for some of the scans I had to put this plastic phallic shaped object in my mouth. Now that was weird. And kind of funny.

I'm sure it depends on the body part. I was having an ankle done. They packed it with foam cushy things so it wouldn't/couldn't move...and they told me not to move it, and then they continued to tell me that I kept moving it.

Well, dang it... I was NOT moving it. I told them that if it moved - it was doing it of it's own volition and they'd have to talk to my ankle directly to sort it out. That made them stop talking to me completely. Apparently they thought I was too crazy? I dunno. The scanned was successfully completely, so I recommend that technique.

The mri is tuesday. I'm having my head examined.

I get these headaches and they are getting worse and more frequent. My shrink sent me to a neurologist who has put me on anti-migraine prevention meds and given me some stuff to take when they start.

But he wants to be sure - 'cause at my age headaches should be lessening, not increasing.

They did an eeg, too. The tech (natch!) said she couldn't discuss the results, but there were some things that were "interesting."
