Is there a national angle on this?

Is it Australians, then, who have this thing about Vegemite?

They took to London with them, to (one imagines) remind them of home.

In the colonies they used to like Horlicks.

I think Marmite and Bovril taste pretty similar, but Bovril is mostly beef stock while Marmite is just yeast extract. Apparently yeast extract has a (bitter) beefyish taste. Bovril and warm milk is supposed to make a nice drink, but I've never tried it. On its own Bovril tastes very much like a beef Oxo cube. We used to make a sort of beef cup-a-soup from it and eat it with bread crusts for a sort of snack.

My dog likes Marmite spread on her biscuits. Just holding one under her nose makes her drool.

>Another thing I am interested in trying is kipper?

They taste and smell okay, but I could never see the point because it's full of little bones that you have to pick out before you can eat it. My dad likes them though. Ox's tongue and kidneys are some other British delicacies you might want to try.

Something I always wanted to know from visting America years ago, what is a twink/twinkie bar?

I forgot to say, the only way I could stand Marmite was to spread a tiny, *tiny* little dot on toast with lots of butter. The trick is not to ply it too thickly unless you're very fond of it. It's a very bitter beefy taste with a nicer smell. It tends to make people gurn and salivate who aren't used to it - an acquired taste...

Q a twinkie? Been around since I was a kind a spongy cake with fake cream inside. To me they were ick. But I never did like cake. Now I know what the vegamite reminds me of. All of you are probably too young to remember Desi and Lucy. She did a show and drank liquor and have to keep saying vegamite and the names as she got drunker came out funnier. Well it was funny. I don't think so. Here's from the back of Bovril bottle:

"A bit of history... In 1936 Bovril extract and milk was a popular DRINK! Add a teaspoon of BOVRIL paste to a glass of hot milk and STIR..."

No, it doesn't sound very nice to me either but someone must have liked it.

It's been years since I tried Marmite, but I liked it. It's quite strong-tasting & salty, if I remember correctly.

I would put butter on a cracker then smear a VERY small amount of Marmite on top. It is VERY concentrated. I think it would be a good way to add flavour to a soup or stew. I've been a vegetarian for decades. I think it could be a good way to add a "hearty" flavour.

As to kipper - before I became a veggie, I LOVED the taste of kipper - once again, salty, if I remember & quite smokey.

:-))) Kath

Hi Kath...
So you are a vegetarian or vegan. I know that lots of vegetarians/vegans like to use marmite in cooking from what I have seen on the web. I am to shy to try it yet lol. We don't have bovril here or vegemite...
I use nutritional yeast flakes though...

I was curious about it so I bought a small jar.

I tired a tiny bit and I didn't think it was that bad. It's salty, a little bit bitter and savory.

I'm going to put some on toast tomorrow for breakfast. LOL

I want to try vegemite too, someone told me it's less bitter.

*******Sorry it's taken me so long to answer you.

I'm a veggie - I eat dairy but no meat, fish, poultry or eggs. My husband doesn't eat gelatin either, but I will when taking supplements in capsules if they're made from gelatin.

If you do try it, remember, use just a wee little bit at first. It is VERY strong. I haven't had it for years, but do remember liking it on a cracker with butter - just the tiniest scrape of it.

:-) Kath

Mmmmmmm - a little bit on toast with butter. Yum.

I'm going to buy some. I have trouble finding anything that I can force myself to eat for breakfast sometimes. Thx for that idea.
