This could be a trigger to some but for those of us who have pets and care about what they eat and how they feel please see http://www.itchmo.com/ it has the most current recall info and MANY foods we JUST recalled moments ago :*( My cat is sick as it is so I really needed to see even less food he can eat

You will be shocked at all the foods recalled just...today....I am scared to feed them...and human meats are bad too now so you can't just feed them home cooked :-/

i quit feeding wet cat food about four months ago. just decided to switch to tuna and chicken. and i cook chicken and debone it for them.

and why on earth did they let feeders put the tainted pet food into the human food chain? i don't eat meat, so i'm safe......but millions aren't.

i am totally disgusted by all of this happening to pets. and someone will say "oh,it's just a dog/cat".......well, to some of us, it's more. it's family.

From what I've read, meat is the most important ingredient. I've read it should be raw, but that a pet should also have a period to adjust to the raw meat. So I'm guessing cooked meat is okay. Apparently they need veggies too, but you'll have to look up the specifics.

I'm still using dry food myself.

Does anyone else remember how they were saying the next terrorist attack would be to the food supply? I can't help but wonder about that.

Great minds think alike as I thought the same thing. And green beans our vet said to give to our dogs frozen they are crunchy then. Along with their regular food. Love Phillipa

The latest I saw was on Opera where they talked about carnivores needing raw meat. But Opera herself commented that she does cook the meat for her dogs. I think maybe its something we don't know enough about yet. I would think it wouldn't hurt to feed them cooked meat.

I was reading about why cats can't lose weight on even low-cal dry cat foods. My cat is going to be eating a whole new diet. I wish I had known this.
Thanks for the link!!

I have friends who feed their cats raw local organic meat and bone meal on advice from their vets. It's pricey, but they swear by it. Might be a good way to avoid all the brands that are being recalled. There's lots of info online about how to make your own raw pet food.

take care,

my cats eat an organic dry food, that i order, and cooked brown rice with tuna or chicken and a bit of spinach added to it.

my dogs eat brown rice, green beans, tomatoes, potatoes, sometimes pasta, boiled eggs, and some meat......if i trust the source. i boil big bones in the brown rice to leach out the calcium and then remove the bones. i feed the same brand, in small amts, of dry food that i feed the cats. i order it online also.

i do not have vet bills. i've had large dogs live to be 15 and 17, in relatively good health.....
there is no way i'm feeding my pets "ground corn, animal byproducts, animal digest, blah, blah, blah".

their coats are shiny, they play and they feel good. our animals can be fed, at home, easily enough, and that way we know what they are eating. and they love it.

I swear by the whole food diet for my dog as well.

She usually eats chicken gizzard, peas, spinach whole wheat pasta, green beans, fish oil and the like.

She will grab a sweet potato out of your hand.

I just cook her vegetables along with mine really.

I used to have her on the canned/dry food you buy and she was fat, had no energy and her coat was dull.

Now she out walks me, is lively and her coat just shines.

Her breath is better and the gas is gone.

I could have told you a long time ago that they stuff they package into pet food was poison.

Phil you are welcome and please see the site I posted. I know a lot of people swear by raw and even home cooked. They are sounds diets BUT many in here are not READING that OUR chicken and pork ( no doubt beef) has been tainted by these chemicals...so to feed one's dog or cat home cooked diets..or raw ...right now is not much safer than a bag of food..Even organic chickens must eat....and if they eat contaimined foods how safe are they? Thats why I keep telling folks don't count on home cooked right now either..though it MAY be safer than bags and cans of poisen

i'll take my chance with the organic chicken/turkey/beef that i can buy over "animal digest" any day.

animal digest is what is in the animal's gut when it is killed.

dogs don't digest corn........it's a filler and goes right through them. so that's one good sign of a bad food.

i trust my stockpot a lot more than i do a thousand gallon vat of "animal products" and "animal digest" and whatever else, melamine and tainted glutens.

i don't have sick animals. never have. paid $375 for surgery for fayeroe when someone tried to break into my house and she fought them off. shots is all i pay for.

there are a lot of safe animal foods on the market. Flint River Ranch is one. it just takes more work to find them and order them.

for those who are concerned about pet foods.

i've cooked for my dogs and cats for at least 25 years. i start with a base of brown rice, i add vegetables (canned from a source i trust..no carrots) and bones from a trusted source. the calcium in the bones leeches out into the cooked food. i don't feed the bones to the animals. if i can find organic chicken, truly organic, from birth to processing, i add gizzards and livers into this mix.

i give my dogs calcium once a day.

i've found a dry food that i trust and it is made by Flint River Ranch. it's online.

no wet canned food for the cats. only tuna, that i trust, salmon and sardines. organic ground turkey or i cook a turkey and shred it for them.

i don't have any vet bills. i've said this before. but my dogs are so healthy and happy and i don't worry about nasty stuff going into their mouths. one cat lived to be 19 and never had anything done to him but his shots.

my other three only get their shots. same with the dogs. (faye had to have surgery once, due to an attack upon her) a vet in Austin examined her and said she was the healthiest dog that he had ever had in his clinic. ???? not sure that means anything but he couldn't say enough about her weight, stamina and coat and teeth.

cooking for your pets really isn't that difficult. you just throw it all in the same stockpot and feed it to them.
