Review tomorrow

Posted by TexasChic on February 28, 2007, at 22:23:13

Somewhere earlier I wrote about how my boss wrote these notes of appreciation and posted them outside our offices (they had just supplied us with these forms to do so) and she told my co-worker "You are an important part of our team!" and mine said "Thanks for always trying so hard!" (I can't remember the exact words of my boss's notes, you'll have to take my word that it was a sort of unintentional insult). Anyway, one of my other co-workers said, "Whoa that was a backhanded compliment". She's a really sweet lady and it didn't come off as her trying to start something, more like a shared confidence between the two of us. So I was a bit tiffed for a little while.

However, even though it initially irritated me, ('trying' implies 'not succeeding') it was obvious that she was attempting to give me a compliment. I managed to keep my 'inner-bitch' quiet.

So tomorrow is my review. I feel better knowing that I at least got across to her that her comments made me feel like she thought I was goofing off. She has expressed that she knows I'm doing my best. To me, being accused goofing off is the worst of the worst! To be accused of not trying or being lazy!?!? I'm sure there's some psychological reason behind that, but I don't feel like pursuing it right now.

The bad thing is, I know she's going to come up with some warped perspective of how I need to improve. So PLEASE SEND GOOD VIBES for me! Good vibes that I hold my temper, keep my 'inner-bitch' quiet, be as positive as possible and turn any negative feelings into something positive. And just to keep me humble, I HAVE to remember I'm very lucky to have this job!!! No matter what the negatives, the positives far outweigh them! So its time to suck it up and play the game. I believe I can succeed.

Thanks everyone! Yes it went pretty well. She gave me a few low scores but always followed it up with "but you're still LEARNING". But overall it came to 'met expectations', so that was good. Also our rapport has gotten back to the previous easygoing tone it was before we both got upset. She said alot of real positive things too like that she expects me to move up whether its in our department or another. She said she wouldn't have hired me if she didn't think I had that quality because she would never hire someone who would just settle for this position for the next 10 years. So all that really made me feel good.

One thing she wants me to improve is my confidence, and to take more risks. Yeah, what else have I been trying to do my whole adult life!?!? Of course she doesn't know that, and one thing I've learned is no one NEEDS to know that. No one needs to know how many problems I've had to overcome, or that I was ever much much worse off than I am now. Its been a hard lesson but I think I've finally learned it. My family life never had any boundries whatsoever, so I had to learn about them for myself.

So things are looking good right now, which just goes to show you that sometimes you've got to bide your time and not just storm out when things get dicey. I think I'm getting pretty good at riding out the tough times instead of making rash decisions. Not that its ever easy.

Hi Texaschic,

Glad it went well. I think they always throw in a few low scores to try to trick you into believing they are smarter/better than you (which is not true.)

Hi TC -

I am so happy for you. I hope you're really proud of yourself! Because you should be.

I hope you're able to do something special for yourself in celebration. Even something as simple as maybe a bubble bath by candlelight. Or whatever appeals to you.

I think this is a special time for you. You've 'hung in there', gone through difficult times, overcome difficulties, etc.

Yay for you, luv, Kath

Thanks! I do feel good about it.

Today my boss brought me a birthday cake. It was shaped like a purple dragon - very cute. And she got me a present/housewarming gift - candles in a mosaic tray with rocks around it. Its hard to describe, but its cool.

I also signed my lease today. So all and all a good day!

Thanks! Yeah, I try hard to concentrate on the good things in my life. There are other things I don't mention though. Sometimes I just can't bring myself to talk about the unpleasant stuff. Sometimes it makes it too real. But then, sometimes I have to bring it up anyway.
