Diagnoses

My dog scratches.

He seems not to have fleas.

Therefore his condition is psychogenic.

Isn't this the standard?

hehe maybe :) My dog has the same problem. She is scratching after several flea treatments, no fleas found. Maybe I have given her some kind of psychatric disorder. My Mother swears that I gave her OCD :P

They've actually given Prozac to dogs with symptoms of OCD believe it or not.

Something like psoriasis? That's Omega3s(?).

OCD? Well, animals are very sensitive (compared to us).

Our dog might be suffering from Housebound Syndrome.

There's always Anipryl (deprenyl) I could give him, but given as it will extend the life of only one sex of beagle and I forget which, and I'm unsure of my feelings toward him, I'm not sure if I should give it to him.

I read clomipramine was the only antidepressant licensed for use in dogs, but that was some years ago. They were using clomipramine to treat compulsive barking and tail chasing.

My dogs have had Celexa accidentally and Seroquel deliberately (hoping it would knock my Staffie x Doberman pup out for the day while I went to an appointment but seemed to have no effect - came back to find books shredded the furniture torn to ribbons).

The vet once suggested amytripaline once for my cat who was stressed out (and weeing everywhere) but luckily this vet is up on his research and suggested some sort of neutracetical to stop it. I nearly laughed out loud when I heard the vet!!

Kind regards

Meri

Don't they cause skin troubles, like when they get into cat ears? I guess you'd need a maginifying glass to be sure.

What about allergies? There are food allergies which can cause scratching and/or rubbing around the face, and adape which is environmental allergies. Adape can cause skin and/or respiratory issues. My dog has been on hydroxyzine HCL for years. She also has a special diet since she has food allergies as well--venison and potato. Lucky dog, eating "gourmet" if that equals expensive. I also have to use grooming products without fragrance and certain ingredients and a leave-in conditioner with hydrocortisone.

Our dog is the "poster dog" for canine allergies. She needs her own telethon to cover the vet bills. ;)
