I'm not that informed either, Phillipa. It's a Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, and involves fasting until sundown. Last weekend was Rosh Hashanah. These are the big holidays in the Jewish faith.

I would love to learn more too :)

I wonder how many religions practice fasting?

Right now Muslims are fasting from dawn to sunset everyday for a month for Ramadan. There are many Muslims where I live. They sure have a lot of discipline.

This is one of many decent summaries out there:

I am a Christian, but studied the basics of Judaism quite regularly about 10 years ago, with the possibility of converting. Though I ultimately didn't, it was awesome to learn what I did learn. I used to frequent this website a lot back then...

Thank you very much, 10der, that was really interesting. I am just starting to learn about the ways that Jewish liturgical music impact the history of western music ("classical" music) and so the link for the KolNidre was wonderful.

I wonder if this holiday has anything to do with the more pensive respectful and considerate behavior I have been enjoying from my Jewish friends and colleages for a few weeks now? Alternatively, maybe I'm just more receptive, or more likely to elicit such behavior from others.

The meaning of "atonement" is one that is surely universal to humankind. So, I will take some time in the next few days and think about atonement. My timing might be a little off by the Jewish calendar, but I think there is always a time and a place to consider what laws or promises we have broken, and which relationships we have disregarded. Recognizing these human flaws is the first step towards repairing myself and my relationship with others and society in general.

Thanks again,
-Li

Sheesh.....you write such beautiful things.

Thank *you* for that. Reminds me I have some Jewish music CDs stashed away somewhere in my pigsty-that-passes-for-a-house (do pigs read here? If so, I'm sorry and a PBC-P (Please Be Civil to Pigs) for me)

I digress....badly....

Anyway....music....ahhh, without it, my life would be drained of much color and solace and hope. Some amazing cantors singing prayers on those CDs, and other stuff...I should find them.

Night.

I shall convey your regards to my SigO, who observes these holidays.

He was faint, overcome with weakness, etc all day yesterday, so much so that he observed his annual retreat to the bedroom, so as to conserve energy after having missed breakfast and lunch.

His complexion became pallid and his breath shallow, his pulse weak. I was about to call the physician, when he rose from the pillows, and betook himself to the nearest Synagogue.

Luckily, in due time, he was revived by the also-annual dinner of lox and bagel with cream cheese--and a few other delicacies-- all of which could be consumed without any of the usual concern about the effects on his avoirdupois. He has by now regained all of his previous health and good humor (well-- at least health).
