computer mouse problems

Posted by Larry Hoover on June 8, 2006, at 7:17:13

I need some advice. Where to look for my problem, hardware or software.

This morning, after boot-up, which seemed to go normally, I went to click on my normal start-ups for the day. My mouse thought that a single left-click was better represented by an infinite series of left-clicks, though. I really did not need 72,000 or whatever instances of Google/web browser open, all at once. Hey, I work up in number during the day, but I don't start that high.

Rebooted.

Problem seemed worse. I couldn't even open my browser, as my system log-in screen flashed on and off so fast that I couldn't even "catch" it.

I couldn't shut down because I couldn't remember the keystrokes that substituted for all the mouse-clicks I usually use. I eventually figured that out, rebooted and did a system restore from the keyboard. Try *that* one, a'ight?

Not sure if that totally fixed it, or not. Not sure if humidity is an issue, and the dang thing just dried out from all the heat it generated loading 72,000 google pages, instead of the restore point switcheroo.

I'll happily just get a new mouse, or whatever, if that's what it is. I'm wondering if a recent software update (Adobe Acrobat) might have messed up my registry?

Computer geeks, I know you're out there. Help me, please? Please? Pretty please with sugar on top?

I was half-way into computer/internet withdrawal. It was not a pretty sight.

Does the mouse need a cleaning? Maybe a bit of WD-40?

It really just sounds like it got stuck, and then when you did a shutdown it wasn't a clean one. A non-clean shutdown can make the next boot-up behave oddly. But a clean reboot after that *usually* resolves it.

But - remember - to shut down processes <ctrl><alt><delete> brings up the list of processes to kill - and a repeat of it will shut down the system.

Sounds like a hardware problem (the mouse) to me. Maybe you can borrow a mouse for a test. Otherwise, buy one; they're cheap. You can always return it if that isn't the problem.

It's an optical mouse. Maybe the button just wore out?

I always shut down cleanly, as far as I know.

I really think that if it was shutdown problem, it was that darned adobe. It gave me the reboot now/reboot later screen, and I chose later. And it showed that reboot screen again, during shutdown.

If it does it again, I'll think mouse.

It wouldn't reboot under that. That's what I always do, and it wouldn't. Maybe I was impatient.

Thanks.

Ya, return it. Good idea.

Well, whatever ate my mouse ate the rest of the computer. I was, no bs, typing a reply to someone about Window's temp files, and how they can jam up a hard-drive with allocated but forgotten sectors, when my mouse went nuts, the whole thing froze, and would not reboot. I powered down (I know, but sometimes you don't have a choice) got the black screen, and it wouldn't start. Wouldn't start in safe mode, either. The Windows logo would flash, and I'd be back at the black screen. Pray for me. All my links and stuff are in there. Nothing is backed up. Who backs up?

I am posting from my son's computer. I haven't even heard what's wrong with mine, yet. Monday, at the earliest. Now Windows is blocking me. :-/

I am serious. I used the Windows name in vain. And it crashed my computer. There must be an easter egg in there, or, it was not a coincidence.

I am back, sort of. New mouse. No time.
