Mr. Bush

Posted by llrrrpp on May 25, 2006, at 10:55:25

My husband participates at a ceremony today with President Bush himself. I reminded him to be 'civil'. I hope his prefrontal cortex obliges. He's not so fond of the big boss.

Pretty impressive to be in the company of any president even if you don't like them.

An update:
Husband was only 7 feet away from the prez. He said Bush is pretty short in person. And that he looks dumb in person, not just on TV. I dont' think husband was suitably impressed. I had to tell him that he just saw possibly the most famous person in the world right now. (besides Osama...)

hmm, not too sure how many people there are in the rest of the world who are too fond of him either...

Maybe Tony Blair???

BTW Does Bush acknowledge anthropegenic climate change these days?

Anyway its still pretty impressive that your husband went.

I couldn't stand Bush back when he was Governor. But lets face it, I'm a liberal stuck in a blue state.

It sounds like your husband did really well though. I know alot of people who wouldn't have been able to hold their tongue.

And I agree, your husband did meet the most famous, if not the most loved, person in the world right now. Bush will definetely go down in history.

I have SUCH a longing for politicians to be true statesmen. What has happend to us? Am I being too idealistic?

On the Newshour tonight there was a discussion among academics on this question. They said that Franklin Roosevelt had news conferences twice a week in the midst of the depression, and during WW II. The public knew things were bad, the president admitted the facts and offered hope and solutions, not some dogmatic come and get us response.

These days we get excuses, buck passing...I fear we have have lost something, something that at one time was admired by the rest of the world. I may be blocked for this post, so be it.

Can we just tell the truth?

warm regards, Jake

I couldn't agree more. I wonder how the next admin is going to untangle the quagmire we're in. We need a big change in Washington.
I've just stopped reading the news. It makes me sick.

I went to colonial Williamsburg last year. I attended a lecture with special guest "Thomas Jefferson" I know this guy is an actor, but he was so convincing. The best part is that he did Q & A afterwards. The audience was asking him about the negotiations surrounding bill such and such, passed in 1893, about his relationship with Hamilton, etc. And he was so suave, and knew so many details. THIS actor was a better president. He knew his history better than the current president. He was more thoughtful, and could formulate an argument that was supported. I wish we could have real life debates without all the scripts, selected audiences, pre-briefed media, etc. I wish our current leadership were states[wo]manly.

Hi Jake
I'm afraid the heroic age has passed. Statesmen? But you would have seen our bloke, no? You missed him? No loss.

I don't think that sounds block worthy. Everyone is intitled to their own opinion. That''s why we each have our very own brain. But what do I know?

I do agree with you. There are many things going on that would cause our forefathers to turn over in their graves.

Just the way election has turned into a two party system is bad enough. Right now nobody will back an Independent because they feel there's no chance for them to win. They must instead choose the lessor of two evils.

I think a possible solution would be having a runoff election (I think that's what its called). You vote for your first, second and third choice, and if your first choice doesn't get enough votes to carry it, they go to your second choice.

I think the only reason nothing has been done about it is because powerful people want it kept the way it is. Have you ever thought maybe the Rep and Dem are all part of one big group? They give the public this 'election' to keep us passified, but in reality the whole thing is fixed? That's my current conspiracy theory anyway.

I hope this doesn't get redirected to Politics.

Maybe I have rose colored glasses, but perhaps heroism and truth can return. Declan you know your history, sometimes dark ages give rise to revulsion then something new and better breaks out. TxChic I agree our two party system is broken and corrupt. Maybe its an opportunity. But I'm just speculating.

The flags are at half mast now in Texas due to the death of Lloyd Bentsen (ran for VP in 1988). No saint, but he had many qualities of a true statesmen who understood the ideal serving the public interest...something that you don't see much anymore. People forget that Texas has a long history of progressive politicians.

warm regards, Jake

Hi Jake
Is the commodification of more or less everything, and the turning of us into consumers rather than citizens, and the now tight vertical corporate control, having a bad effect on moral standards generally? (sense of entitlement and production of shamelessness) Take the climbers on Mt Everest. 40 go past the bloke who is dying because he is past help. You have to wonder if that would have happened 50 years ago. I do think people are more alienated from the political process than at any other time in my life. Independants get elected now, and people are hungry for decency. So that's a bit hopeful.
