Can you tell me about SPAM?

Posted by LegWarmers on January 4, 2006, at 19:31:12

I see it advertised in magazines sometimes, or differnet media forms, well...what on earth is it? Do people really eat it, or is it a joke? It looks old school, like 60's ads, I thought is was cat/dog food at first but then found out it was people food. Its still a mystery to me.

spam is a wondrous beast, and is the butt of many a joke. Have you ever seen the famous Monty Python skit about it?

My dad used to eat it. And we'd taste it too. It's not as bad as it looks, but there is that jelly-like meat-gel substance covering the pink slab.

My friends and I found a huge bunch of spam haikus on the web one time, and then had tons of fun making our OWN spam haikus.

You should try it! Just for fun. See what you think, and report back here!

The jellylike substance is just fat. Like chicken soup that hasn't been strained. If you heat it up it melts.

My father liked it so we had it not infrequently in my home. If you fry it fairly thin and crispy, it doesn't taste that bad. Sort of salty like bacon. And thin and crispy cooks out the excess fat so it's not icky. But then I find balogna icky too because of the fat content. And some hot dogs.

Sliced thin, coated in egg and breadcrumbs, and cooked sort of crispy, it's even better than simply thin and crispy.

Now why my father, who was so picky he wouldn't even eat pasta, liked Spam and canned corned beef hash so much is a mystery I can't fathom.

I ate it years ago and it wasn't bad. Before the cholesterol thing. Fondly, Phillipa

The canned corned beef hash is a bigger mystery than spam. Salty fried stuff is at least somewhat understandable. I see no purpose to canned corned beef hash.

hotdog sausages ain't bad.
they hardly contain any animal content (either meat or fat)
they are mostly soya...

that is why...

vegetarian sausages aint' bad.
indistinguishable from a hot dog sausage IMO

though of course...

around three times the price...

SPAM is short for spiced ham :)

Isn't that cute ;) the inventors brother shorted it to spam, what a clever guy ;)

A spam poem:

The color of Spam
Is natural as the sky
A block of sunrise
Pink tender morsel
Glistening with salty gel
What the hell is it?

Doctors suggest eating spam regularly = angioplasty

they are the regular meat ones. the regular meat ones are typically mostly soya...

i have no idea...
are they? i haven't noticed... but then i smother them in american mustard (better than english methinks) and tomato sauce (aka ketchup)

yeah. still... wehn you consider the quality of the meat in hotdog sausages you are probably better off with soya

Once you look, you will find Spam sparkling like a gem in the potted meat section of your grocery store. There will be other, pale imitators, but you must get the best!

of course, I urge you to do this when I myself will not. But I love making fun of SPAM. :)

mmmmm....canned corn beef hash. I LOVE that stuff! I know it's bad...I know it...but it's tasty and addictive to me. I haven't had it in years, but reading this message, I can actually taste it in my mouth. Yummm....I can TOTALLY appreciate why your dad liked it so much! :)

I always refer to the big round slab of meat that they cut for gyros as "lamb-SPAM".

Any kind of mystery meat is yucky to me.

Its one of those things that if you were raised on it, you started liking it before you knew how gross it was. Its especially gross uncooked. That jelly stuff is discusting. But a spam and cheese sandwich with mustard? M-m-m-m, sounds good to me. Of course, any meat is gross if you give it much thought or investigation. I've heard a tour through a chicken or beef factory will make a vegeterian out of anyone.
