Spriggy-esque question

Posted by Larry Hoover on November 5, 2005, at 12:42:21

Since Spriggy has been seriously behind in her questions, and I am too strained to seek an answer myself, I ask, "Where do they get the seeds from to grow seedless watermelons?"

there's always a few seeds in a "seedless" watermelon but are they fertile? How do you make them grow? If the balance of seed to seedless isn't just right, eventually the watermelon will revert to one or another won't it? So does that mean they're constantly re-bio-engineering the seeds to keep the right balance.. because if you have too MUCH seedless, won't you eventually run out of seeds to plant? Or maybe there's no such thing as seeds, anymore. I'm pretty sure they can clone stuff like this y'know. Clone food. They can do that to meat now, apparently.
Make it grow on its own.
Vegetarian meat.
Or close to, anyway.
It's in Harper's this month. Back page. Yup. 1984 has come and gone. We're beyond the beyond.

Well except that wasn't 1984 more of a statement on big brother, more the human state, more of an Animal Farm. Orwell wrote them both .. Orwell served time in Burma, maybe I should take some Orwell, yes I'll go see what the library has, there's some Indian-type reading .. and the British in India, this very interesting scrapbook.. need to find the Portuguese in India though..
my brain's a hundred miles a minute and my body's on STOP...
Noon again today, before I get out of here.
In any case I'm referring more to the Huxley-ish side of things, you know, "...the dangers of moral anarchy in a scientific age...." (from Chambers Biographical Dict) .. we're there, we're living science fiction and it's too much for us, we're not ready for it. It's akin to the state of vehicular traffic in countries which didn't experience an Industrial Revolution .. I mean, look at it, it's atrocious. They weren't ready for it either. And on the Autobahn, an accident is not like an accident in this country. You speed things up to much, you get badly hurt.
We're finding out.

Why would meat GROWN like this mean anything to us if consciousness weren't the reason for being alive? Does the conscious have a soul? What's a soul anyway? Consciousness, consciousness only so does that mean that you can have a good soul if you are a good person and a bad soul if you have "no conscience"? I mean, if you have no conscience, isn't that like being Unconscious, so can you be held responsible for that? I mean, can you be held responsible for behaving in a psychopathic manner if you're not conscious of doing that?????

I'm sorry Larry

I have to rant, and I'm doing it here.
Being unconscious of your behaviour doesn't necessarily make a person bad, does it? I mean if you behave like a psychopath, you use people, that doesn't mean you ARE a psychopath, does it? But aren't we always talking about paying attention to what people do, not what they say? Or how they behave rather than how they justify that behaviour.
But then, how do you define good or bad, sane or insane? Can a person Become Conscious, and change from bad to good, insane to sane? What is sane? Am I sane? I don't think so, but maybe a jury of my peers would have different findings. Maybe my mind is so totally screwed up that I no longer can see Anything Clearly.
Does that have to be okay with me?

Verne, do live in the northern USA? I picture you (for some reason) always in the north, maybe near the Great North Woods (Tangled Up in Blue), assuming they exist.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and used to live on the northern Oregon coast. Now I'm a fish out of water in Iowa - the place where where they grow corn for movie sets. I don't know why so much science fiction occurs in cornfields.

I plan to move far away from Iowa in a couple years, preferably near water.

Cornfields are abundant in the United States; they're a cheap, common backdrop .. common as in, there's cornfields near just about everybody, isn't there????
They certainly are becoming ubiquitous here. Corn 'n potatoes. Corn 'n potatoes.
So, what cheaper more common set could you use? I'd go for the cornfield too, if I wrote Sci-fi. Crop circles and all that.
