Peace march and rally....did you go? Where was it?

Posted by Jai Narayan on March 19, 2005, at 13:18:08

there are 765 peace rallies in the US alone...
others in Ireland....
and where else?

I went to peace vigil held in front of the post office today in Vermont.
there were 50 of us.
It was a silent vigil.
we got lots of support from the drivers who drove past...
a few negative comments.

I dreamed last night I was in a group of people who were being tortured. I was waiting my turn. You can imagine how I felt upon waking.

At the rally my sign read "Fund Peace"
The United States Military Spends $25,000 Per Second.

peace is possible

I have never been to a peace rally, but would like to participate one day. Wasn't it John Lennon who said "All we are saying is give peace a chance". I seem to be hearing that song in my head so often these past number of months. So much violence, so much hatred, so much intolerance, so much greed, so many senseless deaths. It has to end soon. It just has to.

:-)
If there wasn't any war there wouldn't be any starving people...

Imagine how much peoples quality of life would improve if all the money that goes to war were to be spent on health care and education etc etc. But then I guess there is money to be made in selling weapons... Even if they are to be later used against the US military... Oh well... There is money to be made...

Sigh.

I go round and round in my mind pondering what this planet is about.
what I am doing here.
then the forever question:
what's the meaning of life....
(I know it's 42)
sometimes I think that the Hindus have it right:
many gods with all types of emotions and they include destruction. Kali is the destroyer....
I could learn something about life if I had everything represented in my pantheon of gods.
maybe then I could see the BIG picture.
you know get a grip when something horrible comes.
As it is I get overwhelmed....
fall to pieces
cry a lot.
and wonder....
what is this life about.

Hey Alex thanks for the comment it made me think.

It made me think, too. That war is part of the nature of humanity, and it's our lot to be forever warring one faction against another.
War makes me cry, too. It's difficult to comprehend how a violent end can be a rightful and inevitable part of the circle of life.

Um. It is also in our nature to run around naked and so on. I am wary of seeing war as being 'part of our nature' because then it is like saying 'oh well, can't be helped' but I really do think it is unacceptable.

> War makes me cry, too. It's difficult to comprehend how a violent end can be a rightful and inevitable part of the circle of life.

I don't see it as rightful or as inevitable.
I think it will stop one day.
But not for a great while yet.

Greed
Power
Money

It is about those things and more besides.

What we need...
Is a world government.
But that is a wee way off yet ;-)

War doesn't really come up here as much as it does if you are a big powerful country with a lot of clout...

Or when you are pretty good at making and selling weapons or whatever...

Or when you have the means to go to war...

We only do the peacekeeping thing.
Because we can't do anything else.
If we had the means...
Well...
Who knows how different it would be.

But I still think war is unacceptable.
It is only if people see it that way that we have a chance of changing it in the future.

If you see it as inevitable
Then you have given up before you even begin...

Yes..indeed AK. That is what the UN *should* be...a world government...but well..you know the story.

In human circles, there is no 'war instinct', no thing that makes us launch an unprovoked attack.
Animals mostly have a reason to kill..either for food..or for protection. But no, not us humans! Plus, animals don't kill innocent animals in large quataties i.e. Hiroshima. I remember a t-shirt I had..a picutre of a whale carrying a sign saying "Save the Humans"..lol

Best,
Jay

so true Jay....
how about messing up the earth?
and it's animals?
Air, water, soil...
in my particular place for 100,000 years.
so long....so long...
how many generations?
yes I want to cry till all the sky is clean
the earth is purged of toxins
and our lovely oceans:
oh my god the oceans...
the whales, dolphins, tuna.....
seaweed...
oh my our lovely blue planet...
that I could rescue her...
yes it makes me sad.

That we can help mend the earth? We seem to be on such a destructive track and have been for a long time. How long before this poor planet gives up?
Oy, I'm not a happy camper this morning. So sorry.

sorry you are not a happy camper....
I am usually blue on Tuesday.
you know there's an herbal product called Happy Camper?
it takes the edge off...
I've never used it but my sister loves it.

I live "as if"...
as if I make a difference and as if something will change
I resigned myself to this stance.
I just couldn't function with all the saddness dragging me down.
but every once in a while I get especially sad. you know when something happens....
then I have to mourn.
when I am done I go on acting "as if" again.
On some level my attitude and actions has does have some effect.

what's the alternative?
I am hoping to reach joy through meditation and working out my fears.
that will enable me to function more fully on anything I do.

I appreciate your compassion pc..
love hearing from you.

There are little things we can do...
They don't make much difference if only a few people do them, but if everyone did them it would make a lot of difference...

Recycling.
Mass transit.
Cutting down on plastic bags (reuse them or put groceries in reusable cardboard boxes etc).
Environmentally friendly detergents etc.
There are little things we can do...

Yes, I try to help in these ways like you... but when you see that the government plans to drill for oil in the Artic, instead of putting the effort into finding alternative sources of energy; when you see so many SUVs on the road consuming resources we already don't have - plus I live in a place that is FLAT!! and these vehicles are just not necessary in our mild environment; even something as simple as seeing a cigarette butt tossed out a car window makes me feel like me taking our recycling to the local depot is not making an ounce of difference...

I should really refrain from reading the news for a while and just work on doing my little bit, and encourage others to do the same.

It's at times like these that I ever get homesick for my native land - Canada - where respect for the environment is just about bred right into the culture.

it's not easy being green,

when you see so many SUVs on the road consuming resources we already don't have

-- Or when you see three vehicles parked in the driveway of one home!

-- I agree that we seem to be doing a better job of preserving our greenspace and protecting the environment here in Canada. But, the government does not necessarily make it easy for people to try to conserve energy (in one subdivision of the city where I live, households are forbidden to install solar panels on their roofs - city by-law or something stupid)

> it's not easy being green,

-- It certainly isn't. When my brother lived with me, I would have to fish through the garbage to pull out the tins, all paper products, etc. that he would just throw out without a thought. He would give me sh*it for doing it because he felt it was a waste of time. I told him fine, when your kids are forced to play in landfills, you won't be thinking it was such a waste of time. I am happy to say that now that he has his own home is has become an avid recycler.

I drive an SUV.

We don't have three cars - we have four.

smile.

But the SUV doesn't get too many gas guzzling miles on it. And hubby drives a small pickup. And the off at school daughter has a matrix.

And the fourth is a toy to be brought out on special occasions - a 1972 Opel GT.

Cute as a bug. I took it to the Jr. High carwash on saturday and the kids just swarmed.

Here are some pictures (not mine)

http://images.google.com/images?q=opel+gt&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=ii&oi=imagest

Ok, serious. I do recycle, I've replaced all the old air and heating bits to newer high efficiency, we mulch and use no pesticides and I think littering is a sin second to adultery.

but I'm {she says meekly} keeping my suv.
