NHL = National Hockey League. The 2004/05 season has been cancelled after owners and players failed to reach a labor agreement. Hardly an earth-shattering event in the grand schemes of things, but Canadians and Americans tend to be very passionate about their professional sports.

Yeah ok, so I don't suppose it matters whether it is ice hockey or field hockey (though my money is on the former).

Heck, there would be public outrage and shock if something happened to interrupt our rugby-football season.

I do understand that.
We like our sports too :-)
You guys play funny sports is all ;-)

The last time the Stanley Cup was not awarded was 1919 during an influenza outbreak that depleted the teams of having enough players! Today all it takes is money to stop a tradition. How sad.

why is it that american football players are paid ten times more for ten times fewer games in the season???

If we are going to bring it down to denigrating the players for asking for more money, then we should make sure we realize WHY they are asking for more money.

oooh, and alexandra_k, OUR sports are weird??? You guys throw the ball in the wrong direction!!

(teasing, I liked watching Rugby in college!)

Go get em AK! But I mean really how seriously can you take jibes from people in a country that has a "World Series" where they only play with themselves - I mean where no-one else gets to play - oh you know what I mean (and aren't offended I hope), and where the average sports fan has the attention span of a butterfly. Seriously a 90 min game of football that takes 4 hours to play and where only a half dozen players ever touch the ball - Gimme a break =0)

but who named the vegetable after the sport??? (nm) » Toph

Depends...

You can have a one day game
A three day game
Or a five day game.

But the point is it is a day off work...
One can get verrrrrrrry pissed watching a game of cricket.

I admit I'm not much of a fan
5 days and it is a draw is just tooooooo much for me.

Now if you want to start a fight ask an Aussie about the infamous UNDERARM BOWL.

(I am a stirrer, aren't I)

Youch!!!!!!!

Cruel but fair. Okay on behalf of the Prime Minister and entire sporting population of the country I apologise unreservedly to the nation of New Zealand for that moment of unsporting insanity which should have been punished by repeated public beatings.

Will that do?
