Search for a new therapist

Posted by deirdrehbrt on February 2, 2005, at 15:34:36

Last month my T told me that she was ending her practice and that I needed to start looking for a new T. Shortly thereafter I spent ten days in a psych hospital. Honestly, I think I was well on my way to the hospital before she told me she was retiring, but I don't think that news was helpful.
Anyway, I've begun my search and will be meeting with two potential therapists this week, one tomorrow and one on Friday. It's been an interesting search as I've spoken to some therapists who don't want to deal with a case such as mine. From "I usually work with short-term cases" to "I don't think I'm equipped to deal with a patient with such a constellation of symptoms".
Honestly, I'm glad they're up front. I'm glad too that I'm finding some who actually meet with me. I'm wondering though, what questions some of you might consider asking a potential T. I am compiling my own list, and am just looking for advice.

Thanks,

Dee.

Dee,

I admire you for taking the time to interview therapists. Typically, for whatever reason, women don't ask potential therapists a lot of questions, and probably ask more questions of their mechanic than their therapist.

One of the "Falls" here (was it fallsfall or fallen4myT???)has a great list of questions. If I knew then what I know now, I would ask the following:

1. How long have you been in practice? (I think experience is VERY important.)

2. Have you had any experience treating people with my "constellation of symptoms" and what is the general outcome? What would my treatment paln be like?

3. Will we have therapy goals and can we go over these goals and my progress on a regular basis?

4. What are your policies on phone calls, gifts, changing appointments, boundaries, etc.?

5. Are you open to me being able to look at any therapy notes or are you willing to share with me what you are writing each session? (My T does this and I really like it)

6. If I have transference will you promise not to dump me or get freaked out???

7. What is your therpauetic orientation? And try not to take "eclectic" as a final answer

I don't vouch for any of these sites, but they all at least looked helpful.
