NEED HELP with odd topic

Posted by Fallen4MyT on December 2, 2004, at 18:36:52

I am cooking with fresh spices lately (I will NEVER use Cilantro again) and bought some oregano to add to my healthy spaghetti sauce I do know you're suppose to cut it up small but how much do you use? The same amount as dry? And do you cook it with the sauce? Thanks ahead I know this is odd but I don't have anyone to ask.

I detest Cilantro, yuk, My ex didn't believe I really hated it, he though I was just trying to be difficult so once he secretly put a little bit in a sandwich he made for me thinking I would eat it and not notice. I noticed, and I yelled! I really should have known there was something up when he offered to make me a sandwich.

The general rule for Oregano, is to use twice as much fresh if the recipe calls for dried.

Good luck

OMG he WHAT? Who would eat that on a sandwich sounds like my ex in some ways sorry but it did make me lol a bit...My husband and I both hate it...who knew lol....and I had made healthy baked stuffed mushrooms I SAW ON A T.V SHOW with crab, cheese, ground up mushrooms, garlic and UGH Cilanto....that stuff is lethal and I will never forget it..I picked the stuffing out and ate the shroom caps ...Thank you Gabbix on the Oregano. I have my low carb pasta and all and don't want to mess this up....I am a good cook when I cook just never used fresh spices and will never ever use any kind of Cilantro again :P

What's wrong with cilantro?

I rather like the unique flavor. I won't eat salsa without it.

I LOVE cilantro!

And lots of other fresh herbs. I had a good deal of luck this year in growing some, and I moved many indoors. I hope they do well in the window. I also love rosemary. Yummy!

I have used as much as 3 times as much fresh as is called for dried herbs. But then I love herbs and tend to use them more than salt.

As far as adding them towards the end or cooking them in, I suppose that varies. I tend to do what suits my mood. Sorry that isn't much help. Oregano is probably okay to add in right away. Basil, mint, or (gasp) cilantro I tend to add late, so they stay kind of crisyp/cool tasting. How's that for abstract?

OMG Dinah I thought I would die from tastebudyuckyitis same with my husband. Maybe in a small amount in salsa though I doubt I could eat it...I cannot explain it but to us it was horrible as in I would rather eat caster oil :) Can you tell we hated it..I really would rather starve than eat it in anything. I am Cilantro Phobic now no kidding.

You see that's just it, most people love it, that's why my ex refused to believe I hated it.
It's well how can you describe why you hate the taste of something that most people love. It makes me gag, it's so pungent and overwhelming.
But I like other things that are pungent and overwhelming like Garlic, I don't even mind a little Astafatida, and that is PUNGENT..

It's okay if you like it Dinah and GG. I can accept that : )

I didn't think youre repy was abstract at all GG lol I will add 2 times to 3 what I would on dry Oregano all durring the cooking I think...Um what do YOU use the Cilantro for? Maybe I used too much in those shrooms?
I don't know but color me Cilantro-a-phobic

I like to use cilantro with lime juice as a marinade for steak, chicken, pork or fish. See how much I love it?

Also, I have a recipe for "Winter Vegetable Chili" which is butternut squash, black beans, carrots and onions in a tomato base with chili powder. At the end you add a bunch of cilantro and some sour cream. And you take a spoonful and just go "aaahhhhh".

so I'm not of much help here. I grew lots of herbs and they look real pretty when they bloom, but using them for something other than decoration eludes me.

Sabrina (sweet basil, rosemary, oregano, paprika, thyme and parsley. Lots and lots of fresh parsley)

HAHA! I clean too. Just not as often as most
people. But I do clean. In fact, I cleared
enough room on my desk today to eat a sandwich
and set down my coffee. SO there!

Seriously though, If i knew where stuff
was SUPPOSED to go, I would put it there, i just
have no clue. :)

it was 6 months later.
