I'll Try for a 10

Posted by tabitha on May 31, 2004, at 1:08:10

1. found a new purse after much shopping. it's very hard for me to find an acceptable purse. this one is 'me' enough that I'll use it, but a little bit of a push fashion-wise. Just what I wanted. I'm expanding my boundaries.
2. fought back against the self-critical thoughts about my appearance. feeling more self-acceptance today.
3. Mood is not as low as on prior lonely holiday weekends.
4. Have not drunk any sugary drinks for several days.
5. Making an effort to see aging women as beautiful, and it's helping. Women of all ages, all body types, I see many who are beautiful. Moving toward acceptance of physical aging. I want to lift some undeserved shame.
6. (oh this is getting difficult, 10 is so many...) ran the dishwasher.
7. made a tasty simple dinner of pasta & canned tomatoes.
8. redid my nails. a manicure says 'somebody cares about this little girl'.
9. did a lot of walking this weekend.
10. came across a dance festival today in the park. Enjoyed watching the dancers and the costumes.

(going for extra credit, c'mon, 2 more...)

11. feeling energized.
12. don't have to work tomorrow!

just what i needed!!!

10. i thought to myself today 'quit waiting for someone to solve all of your problems and go fix that washing machine your dam* self girl! how hard can it possibly be, if that dumb looking guy on the maytag commercials can do it, so can you!' i looked online, i made some phone calls, i got out of this 'rescue me' mode. i found a screw driver, a wrench, a pair of knee pads (i knew where those were right off hand). i headed downstairs to the 'scary basement'. i was on my way to becoming a self-made woman. i was taking destiny into my own hands. i almost forgot to unplug the washer first, but i remembered!!!!! then, i started to unscrew where the water hooks up to the washer, but i remembered to turn the water off first, just as it started leaking out!!! after fumbling around for an hour, storming upstairs, downstairs, online, back upstairs and downstairs, swearing several times, i realized i have ABSOLUTELY no idea how to fix a washing machine. i almost destroyed it, just to unleash my rage. i don't recall ever being so furious! my dreams of being 'self-reliant' were shot! but, i do know several people who know how to fix washing machines. and i know my old man's credit card number by heart. so, to prove my self-reliance, the next time he really makes me angry, i'm calling the maytag repair man (and requesting the best looking one they have too!) and inviting him over to fix my washer, an extra big tip, and breakfast in bed! HA! how's that for self-reliance!

9. i saw ray charles, elton john and ryan adams on television today. oh dear lord, with so much talent (not to mention the good looks of ryan adams) i think i may pass out from the excitement. how could i not have a wonderful day when ray charles is on tv? hmmmmmmm?

8. it rained today. and there were tornado warnings everywhere. but, as scared as i was, i think my dog was even more afraid. so, i put on my brave face (not to be confused with my angry face or my happy face) and played with him. i did notice though, at about 3 am, while he was sleeping he was having nightmares. i woke him up. i wonder if he was dreaming about the storm? i wonder if i'll have nightmares? i wonder what the point was of this one? oh, but now the rain has stopped and i can hear the birds singing outside. and my dog isn't having nightmares any longer.

7. crap! i'm out of smokes! can you believe this luck? but!!!! i do see my old man's wallet on the coffee table :) so, i'll have smokes AND ice cream tonight!

6. the silence in the house has stopped. although i almost wish it would continue, i gave (in my own way) and finally put an end to the dreaded silence. it didn't require me saying i'm sorry though, and that's what's important, right? and i didn't have to lie either. so, i won this argument (or did i?). anyway, no more silence. still avoidance, but no silence.

5. i was given a great suggestion on how to get out of therapy this week. i can call in sick *cough* *cough*. i think perhaps a good plan to finally quit therapy, without actually quitting would be to fall ill several weeks in a row until bubba finally takes the hint. who am i kidding? i won't call in sick. i'll be the last person there, until finally bubba says 'karen, thank you for sticking it out. you're the last person to stick with the group and i appreciate it. you can quit coming now.' but oh, imagine the smile on my face that day :)

4. i heard a song today that i forgot about by taj mahal. it was on a cd hidden away and i hadn't heard the song in a very long time. i still can't find stevie wonder but it'll show up when i least expect it, right?

3. my dog looks very cute when he sits in front f the fan. perhaps i look that cute when i sit in front of the fan? (probably not, but it's my 10 list and i can pretend if i want to!!!)

2. i heard from jeff (sd jeff) and he's doing ok. now i have one less thing to worry about.

1. i took a long bubble bath today. i drank coffee in the bath tub, smoked, read bukowski "hollywood" if you are interested), listened to ryan adams, and thought about my new bride and our honeymoon. anyone want to pitch in to send 2 very poor young ladies to mexico?

1. I cleaned my kitchen yesterday
2. My son was home from the Army and I made his favorite meal and we ate it together
3. My son is a true geek, and I'm so proud of him.
4. I started paying bills yesterday, and will keep trying to get them finished today.
5. This is a holiday and my Monday session got cancelled, but he found a slot for me on Tuesday.
6. I called him in a panic right after Friday's session, and he assured me that he wasn't going anywhere and that we could talk about it on Tuesday.
7. After I ripped the ONLY sheet I had for the bottom of my bed, I had a coupon and found some discontinued sheets that were JUST what I wanted (and they were on SALE). They didn't have the size/color I wanted in the store I was in, but a nearby store did, and they sent them to my house. I bought FOUR (4) sheets! This means that I don't have to do laundry and put sheets on my bed on the same day - I can put clean sheets on and do the laundry another day. What freedom.
8. I cut my hair for my sister's wedding. My hair is very thin and brittle and I was just letting it grow as long as it would, but it looked really ratty on the end. She cut off the ratty part, and it really does look much better now.
9. My daughter is taking the opportunity this weekend to stay away from my house. So we both get a break. The school week will come soon enough.
10. I have friends and dogs who love me.

You must be my pocketbook soulmate. Maybe we can shop together sometime?

It is very hard for me to find a purse I like for everyday use. I just bought one not too long ago because my old one was getting raggedy and because I decided I needed to get something in a lighter color (not black) for summer. I'm feeling 'OK' about the purse, but it's got 'issues'. I am very demanding--there are a lot of features I want in a purse:

1. not too big, not too small--big enough for my stuff but small enough to fit into a tote bag if needed.
2. long enough strap to fit comfortably over my shoulder (I'm a 'woman of size'). In winter, it has to be able to fit comfortably over my winter coat shoulder.
3. non-slippery strap so it stays on my shoulder
4. differentiated compartments that are also easy to access quickly--this is actually a tough combo to find. But I don't necessarily want the wallet/checkbook type of annex that are on a lot of purses.
5. lightweight
6. not leather--this eliminates a lot of contenders!
7. not too expensive (well, at least this is compatible with criteria #6 most of the time).
8. Attractive.
9. Not too overly trendy--no glitzy add add-on decorations, etc.

So, you can see that this would make it difficult to find the right purse.

So, congratulations on finding one, Tab!!

Here's what I wanted..
1. big enough to hold all my stuff plus some room left
2. some handy pockets for my shades and keys, which I always toss in there, then can't find later
3. not too organizer-y. I never use the special-purpose features like built-in wallet.
4. hangs comfortably on the shoulder to about waist-level.
5. Fairly flat. Doesn't bulk away from my body.
6. Somewhat trendy. Maybe even (gasp!) a color other than black.
7. Pretty lining. Not brown or black.
8. I'll pay anything. Just give me that special bag.

SO... here it is... tada!

P.S. it has green satin lining.

Tabitha, that is adorable! And Cole-Hahn...even I know that name (I like some of their shoes--very comfy).

It is really nice, but it wouldn't pass my test on two counts--it's leather, and it probably would be too tight around my shoulder/upper arm. Oh, and make that three counts--the price, LOL!

Enjoy it!!

Thanks for the effort! If you get too many matches double-double-quoting just the title, you can also include the author to narrow down the search:

"hollywood (bukowski)"

i do have another question though. is this for research purposes? if so, i'm not opposed to being researched. i do prefer it to be over a glass of wine and soft music though.

This site is not currently considered research. Still, I may publish case studies on this web site or in a book or an academic journal. If I do, I may include example posts. I would, however, try to leave out identifying information.
