It's Spring - I must do a 10!

Posted by All Done on April 16, 2004, at 12:32:43

10. I love Spring! The weather is great today, the sun is shining, and we have our office windows open. I’ll get to wear sandals this weekend and take my little guy to the park. Along the way, he’ll point out ducks (his favorite), clouds, trees, bikes, cars, birds, his neighbor friend, dogs, basketball hoops, babies in strollers, and the sun. His vocabulary changes everyday and he never ceases to amaze me.

9. My husband has been out of town all week and last night my son woke up crying, so I brought him into the “big bed” with me. He managed to turn sideways and hog the bed worse than his Daddy does. But even with the dog at my feet and my son’s feet at my nose, we still managed to sleep through the rest of the night.

8. Chicago. Museums. Navy Pier. Michigan Avenue. Lincoln Park. Great food. Friendly people (yes, we are here. You just might have to look a little). Shopping. The zoo. The Lake.

7. Good friends getting together in Vegas. Does it get any better than that?

6. Now, you may all say “not this again”, but I have to. Calculator watches! Yes, you heard me. I, like KK I believe, have officially changed my position on the calculator watch. You see, when I was in Vegas, I saw a terrible lounge act with a guitar player to whom I found myself oddly attracted. He was *so* not my usual “type”. Leather pants and a jacket with a sleeveless t-shirt underneath. I wondered why I was so drawn, and then I saw it – the calculator watch! He was so sexy my head was spinning (umm, the liquor had nothing to do with it). Transference you suggest? Never. Hey, kid! You have a pair of leather pants you could wear???

5. Cultivating a new friendship. Finding things in common. Finding things not in common. Long, honest conversations. Learning, laughing, and sharing.

4. *Warning* – yet another Mommy story follows. My son made up a new game with his pacifier all by himself. It’s called “Where’s the Binky?” He hides his binky (usually under the blanket that’s on his lap) and asks “binky?” Then, he holds his palms up, shakes his head, and says, “don’t know” in the cutest voice ever. He pulls is out, holds it up and laughs hysterically. I found him playing this with our dog the other day. She doesn’t know where the binky is either.

3. I didn’t burn my house down the other day. The handle of a knife started on fire as I was making dinner, but I found it and put it out before any real damage was done. Lesson learned – remove all knives from anywhere near the burner because the heat alone can start the fire.

2. Slowly feeling a little better each day. (Maybe it’s the Lexapro?) Knowing that each day has the potential to be better than the last. Knowing each decade *has* been better than the last. Anticipating positive changes and my own growth but enjoying what I have today. Finding that not one thing fulfills me, but many things do. Happiness can be found in so many different places and the nice thing is, we can never have too much.

1. Woohoo! It’s Friday and I love Fridays!

I can't do a 10 right now, but I had to say that I love the "Where's the binky?" story! That is too cute... :-)

Enjoy your little one while you can. They grow so quickly...

thank you for the WONDERFUL!!!! ten list... they just keep getting better and better each time i read them.... ok, here's mine!!!

10. i saw a girl today. she looked so very sad. i walked past her, staring at her as i walked by. i stopped and decided to go back. i simply said, 'you look so very sad.' she talked to me. for about 10 minutes while we waited for her roomate to arrive. i don't think i'll post what she said, but i'm so very glad i followed my instinct to talk to her. i think i helped her just a bit and reassured her that things will be better. as she drove by, she smiled and waved. and her smile was real. that's a truly wonderful feeling. honestly it is. to be able to talk to someone and make them smile even when they are in pain and wondering if they are going to die. i'm glad i stopped. i say pooie on those people who don't talk to strangers. you never know who might help you or who you might help!

9. remember the boy i made blush? i found out today he's a psychology major. and i said 'you're a psychology major' in such a loud and flirty way that the whole back part of the class heard it and laughed. he blushed again. i told him i was going to pitch a tent in front of the building that houses the classes for psychology. looks like the beginning of a beautiful relationship. i also started the day with asking him 'how's your day lovely?' he enjoyed it nearly as much as i did...

8. i took a german test today and i believe i actually knew (woooo hoooo!) some of the words and what they meant. now, can you believe that? i may get higher than a c on a test in there finally! looks like some of that hard work will finally pay off! BLASTED language. i still dislike it though..

7. i took off my shoes and walked home bare-foot today. on the side walk and through the grass. it felt nice. i just hope no one looked at my feet. on second thought, who cares? look all you want. i don't care if you look at my feet. i'll agree they aren't the best looking feet in the world, but BOY OH BOY do i have people skills! :)

6. i came home to find i was locked out of my house. i thought 'i'm going to call my old man and rip him a new one.' then i remembered i've lost my cell phone. (oh yes! one of those months!!!) so, using my brains and skills, i found a way into my house. and!!! my dog didn't poop on the floor. my old man will get a hug when he gets home. and i'll somehow find my cell phone. all is right in the world...

5. i have a full carton of smokes. life is good. i'll need them as i have a resume due, a project/proposal/ that dreaded law paper/ another german test/ and i'm still waiting for my shrink to return my call so i can fire him..... but BOY OH BOY do i have people skills. a full carton of smokes. and a huge grin on my face.

4. DEADLINES!!!!! if it were not for deadlines, i'd never get anything accomplished. i'd not do a darn thing. thank the world for deadlines. when i have a deadline in front of me, i work to get things done. and i get them done. in a frenzy. but, somehow i do it. and things get done. and they turn out well. so, thank you deadlines. if it were not for you, i'd not do anything. thank you thank you thank you!!!

3. coffee. thank you coffee. if i didn't have coffee, i'd never hit those deadlines. i wouldn't be able to roll out of bed. i wouldn't be able to stay up past 8 o'clock. i wouldn't be able to function. thank you coffee for helping me get things done. you are a life saver.

2. martini. thank you martini. for allowing me to celebrate when i do accomplish things. if it weren't for you, i wouldn't accomplish anything, as i wouldn't have anything to look forward to. thank you martini for giving me that extra push when coffee falls short. thank you for giving me something to look forward to after the deadline. thank you thank you thank you....

1. friends. thank you. if it weren't for you, i wouldn't be able to take breaks. and without breaks, i'd go nuts. all work and no play makes karen a dull girl. thank you gfor giving me strength. thank you for taking the nightmares away. thank you for giving me something to look forward to. thank you for just letting me be stuck with you. thank you for supporting me. thank you for allowing me to learn. thank you for allowing me to admire you. thank you for your advice. thank you for letting me listen to you. thank you for teaching me. thank you for letting me teach you. thank you for loving me. thank you for letting me love you. thank you for so much more than you people will ever really know. thank you for letting me be an emotional brat :) and thank you for the $3 dress. i look forward to learning so much more in the future from each and every one of you. thank you again really for so much more than you people really will every know....(ok, end scene.. take two action)

Don't know if I can do ten but

1) Easter was rotten weather so we rolled easter eggs today. It was sooooo much fun and I got to frolic in the spring weather. Frolicking is so much fun. My son was utterly adorable, but then he always is. And I'm exhausted. I even rolled down the hill myself to teach my son to do it. :D

2) I always love to shop at the change of the seasons. This change I concentrated on shoes and camisoles. So I have rid my wardrobe of those horrid implements of torture known as bras. Hooray! And my new pink Keds make me feel like a kid again. I was bouncing up and down in place like I used to when I was little.

3) After two weeks of once a week therapy, I have decided that it isn't a good idea and am going back to twice a week and won't even think of three times every two weeks for a while. I forget my therapist if I don't see him for a whole week!

4) Harry's on my lap and he's feeling no worse than he has for months. I'm thinking we won't be able to take a vacation this year, because I'm not leaving him. That makes me very happy. And he'll be fourteen soon. I never thought he'd make his fourteenth birthday. God bless Tamoxifen and the doctors who invented it.

5) Harry's sister can still see.

6) The puppy is starting obedience. Hooray! That is soooo much fun and we'll get to bond. (She already likes to nap with her head on my foot.)

7) My work has been relatively under control and the bosses are almost happy with me most of the time. I don't think it's realistic of me to ask for more than that.

8) Monk (the TV series)

9) Harry Potter

10) Ok. I'm stuck.

My husband has been teasing me all evening about the regression brought on by my new pink Keds.

Bounce.

Bounce. Bounce.

Bounce. Bounce. Bounce.

Alldone - your binky story is just beyond cute. Dogs and kids are so good together!

Dinah - rolling down hills. Did I tell you that when I was in the hospital for the first time (8 1/2 years ago), I convinced about 5 or 6 other patients and I think even a staff member to roll down a significant hill (some even did it more than once!). This was the culmination of accepting that maybe I was capable of having fun once a decade. The last time I was in the hospital I got a patient's two kids to roll down the hill with me. I don't remember if he rolled down, but then he went on the Jungle Gym, fell and hurt himself (shoulder?) significantly. See, rolling is safer.

Well..sometimes it's safer!
I've told this story on babble before, but that was before you were fallsfall. When I was a kid I thought maybe I could roll faster with my hands in my pockets. I ended up rolling fast alright..
right across the street to the neighors curb.

Ow

Don't I know it and I am really trying to enjoy every moment with him to the fullest! Fortunately for me, he really does make it easy for me to enjoy our time together, though :).

You know, falls, my husband and I were just commenting on how our pup has changed since we had our little guy. She's calmed down so much (nothing short of a miracle for a Cairn Terrier, I believe) and she is just great with him.

This is an anonymous quote on my calendar at work:

"A boy deserves two things in life. A dog and a mother who will allow him to have one."

Hmmm. So we should discuss the finer points of hill rolling...

I have not tried the hands-in-the-pocket approach, and maybe I will cross it off my list before trying it!

I prefer to stretch my arms straight above my head when rolling. I find that with my arms at my sides that I am too oblong to roll smoothly.

We also need to discuss eyes. I take my glasses off when rolling (this seems fairly obvious to me). It is fun to roll with the eyes closed, and that does keep dirt and other things out of the eyes while rolling. But I have found it helpful to study the hill before rolling it, so that I have a sense of when the bottom is nearing. I have also found that there are times when I haven't rolled down straight, but curved so that I ended up rolling *across* the hill (not very satisfactory...). When I find that I think I am near the bottom, or I am totally confused and have NO idea where I am, I do find it helpful to open the eyes long enough to figure out where I am.

I have also found it helpful to braid my hair before rolling...

I do mine arms flat at my side. My cautious son does his arms bent to control the roll. :)

What I'd love to do is figure out eyes. Closed or open I get dizzy as dizzy can be. There must be some method that doesn't leave you green.

I'm glad there were no cars coming! And it's always good to hear a cautionary hill rolling safety tale. Fortunately we were at a hill far away from any streets. Even so I stopped myself at the edge of the bottom just for being plain dizzy.

Now the other important hill rolling tip is to scout the area out first for dog droppings or other foul exposed substances. I thought I had done that adequately, but a few egg rolls after my person roll, my husband stopped with an arrested expression while picking up eggs. The next time down he brought a baggie and spent a long time searching. He never would tell me what it was I potentially rolled in. :(

I hope I didn't sound like I was being a wet-blanket, hill rolling is the best!
That story was meant for a chuckle.. it still makes me laugh out loud, even though I was the main character. So yeah, I guess hands in pockets isn't a good idea, but you know, live and learn :(

Now that is good advice..
I realize now that you didn't take my other post as a safety admonishment-- tired eyes. I think I was glazed reading the last part of yours.
You know I never would have thought of scouting the hills for 'stuff'.
Sad when there even has to be a method to rolling down hills. Though I suppose though being spontaneous loses it's charm once you've rolled in dog 'do'
Congrats on your saucy new Keds too.
