I think fuschia is my favorite color to wear

Posted by Dinah on April 7, 2004, at 19:16:28

Fortunately, I manage to be invisible even in bright cheerful colors. So I can indulge my liking for fuschia and sunshine yellow.

But my fuschia tennies are now too small so i think i'll go shoe shopping. The ten pounds I've gained this month shouldn't have affected my shoe size.

I've bought and returned hundreds of dollars of spring clothes because they mysteriously don't fit. :(

I'm proud of you. I am working really hard on wearing things that I like. I'm on the other side though, in not being invisible. I'm looking for the confidence to be me.

As far as the shoes go, I have a theory that as we gain weight, our feet spread out a bit to support that weight. I'm hoping that they shrink back when we lose it.

Fuschia is a lovely color--just not on me. Makes me look green. Not a good combo. So naturally I had to wear it in a wedding once.

I am a green girl. Not always feeling green, thank heaven, but I like all shades of it in clothing. If I try to wear brown, I disappear. If I wear yellow, people ask me if I'm feeling OK. Isn't it weird how colours create such different reactions in people and ourselves? I was never a colour charted person, but obviously there is something to it.

Yellow is sucha tough color. If you can wear it, great, if not you REALLY can't. Green is taking a while to get back in my vocabulary. I was in the Air Force for about six years. Wearing green that long can really dull your apetite.

Hi Dinah,

I'm picturing you in fushia and yellow, and I love the visual image. Those are two of my favorite colors, too. They're very happy colors, I think. I love getting bunches of flowers in those colors.

I like fushia and it looks pretty good on me, but I have a hard time dressing in bright colors. Although, I've noticed a lot of bright red creeping into my wardrobe lately.

Actually, red is my favorite color. It changed when I started taking Paxil. It used to be blue. Now, I can't get enough red. Isn't that weird?

A mark of your better mood in general? I guess I tend to like brighter colors when I'm feeling more energetic.

Jai - When people read that you have Irish coloring, they will be shocked. Before I knew you, I had you pegged for Middle Eastern due to your name! Little did I know we have even more in common, sweetie

Periwinkle is my bestest....except in the big behind area. Nothing but black, dark black, and basic black for back there!

Okay, color me shocked. No wonder I like you. I have pale Irish (well, also English and Finnish) skin, too. And red hair!

Uh oh. Not that I wouldn't like other color combinations...We're all beautiful, right?

Fashion advice?

For those very very few times I care what other people have to see when they look at me.

I have olive skin that tans if I so much as look at the sun through the window. And dark blonde hair which blends in nicely with my skin to make me invisible.

I can't wear light brown at all because people might walk into me, not knowing I was there.

And I know sunshine yellow makes me look horrendously sallow, although I usually don't care because it makes *me* feel cheerful, and I don't have to look at me in it.

But what about my other favorite colors, fuschia, blush pink, and lavender? Does fuschia really bring out the yellow too? I never noticed. I like the vibrancy of the pink color and like to imagine that it brings out a bit of pink to my skin.

I know better than to wear solids of any color, because now I'm fat I look like a giant grape, or a giant piece of bubblegum, or a giant pink marshmallow chick, or a monk. And I know that I shouldn't wear shorter length shirts that cut me off at the waist. And while I spent my early adult years pretty much in tailored shirtdresses, I had to give that up once my son was born and I turned from a T shape to an apple. :( So mostly I wear A line dresses that flare as much as possible, because I just like the feeling of skirts moving against my legs as I walk.

So when I don't want to make the people around me sadder by seeing me, what should I do differently?

Dinah you sound yummy looking to me.... (nm)

Dinah,

Based on how cute you were when you were a little kid you couldn't POSSIBLY be as ugly as you say you are now. I'm not quite sure why we let you keep putting yourself down in this department, I think that you tried to sneak up on us with it (first you were "plain", then you were "unattractive", then "ugly", and now people are saddened by the mere sight of you?). I don't think so.

So what you should do differently is accept the way you look, and know that it is just *you*. And stop trying to make people think you are grotesque.

And I don't really mean anything by it. I'll stick to plain. :) I don't mean to be self denigrating. Just explaining that while I don't ordinarily worry about how my clothing colors affect my looks, there might be times when I do. You know, son's school - that sort of thing.

Colors, clothing, and what works

Dinah, I know what it's like to change shape! Who needs spirits and shape shifters when we have approaching middle age to do the job? There are so many clothes in my closet that I used to love to wear, and now I look like an overstuffed sausage. It has become really important to *feel* good in what I am wearing. That usually means nothing restrictive for me. A tight skirt would probably induce a panic attack in my present state-o-mind. I love those matte jersey coordinates that hide a multitude of bumps and bulges. I love tops that kind of skim over my middle like it was a bad idea. And I find out if I am wearing an unsuitable color when some tactfully asks if I am feeling OK.

I hate mirrors.

lol. You sound a lot like me. :)

I think the only time I really worry about what I wear are around my son and the parents of his friends. As far as I know, no colors but brown and orange look truly awful on me. So I guess I'll just continue on that assumption.

And perhaps the color of my outfits shouldn't be my main concern. :))
