How did you guys feel about The Hours?

My friends and I talk about the film.....and people seem to respond to it in a very mixed way. How do you guys feel about it?

It was kind of different. Some parts I didn't understand, even at the end of the movie. I think Nicole Kidman did an excellent job! I thought that part where Julianne Moore checks into the motel room and has the "water flooding" scene was unique. Anyway, that's just my take... :) What did you think about the movie?

I loved it- I know the whole Mrs. Dalloway story, and I think that helped me tie in all the stories. I adore Virginia Wolfe. It's actually my new favorite- I really loved it, and this is coming from someone who really disliked Ms. Kidman's work beforehand.

It had so much that I could relate to... the writing, the sickness, the madness, the depression, the projection... the hiding... it was very moving to me.

I thought it was a huge disappointment. It didn't do justice to Virginia Woolf or anyone else, and I was stunned that Nicole Kidman got an Oscar for her role. She wore a prosthetic nose and sat around looking morose for not more than 30 minutes. That's not what I call Oscar-worthy. But these days, most movies are over-hyped, and most of the hype ends up being "much ado about nothing."

much ado about nothing.

I originally rented it because of Virginia Wolfe. It is a movie that you definitely have to pay attention to, it doesn't lead you by the hand. It was definitely one of the better movies I've seen in a while. Some other favorites I've seen recently:
Whale Rider
Second Hand Lions
There are probably more, but I don't remember right now.

I watched the Hours with my mother, and it was a bit more than we could handle. We both suffer from depression, and I think we related a bit *too* well to what we were seeing. I just wanted to rush in there and give them all some Paxil, and help them have better lives. As a piece of art, I think the movie was beautiful, but my own emotional reaction to it made me not like it for myself.

Lord....sorry that I posted the question and didn't write back immediately......it's been a crazy week! (I am still so wound up even though it's so late at night, since I just got home.)

You know, I can really relate to when people say that the movie is boring or too emotionally-triggering. To me, the movie was threaded togther with something so.....subtle, and I definitely can't watch it when I am "down" cause otherwise I might fall asleep or become depressed. Yet, I love it.

Love it; love it; love it.

Perhaps it's because I found the images poetic and the details thoughtful. I also love the subject matter (hmmm...that sounds a little weird.) What I meant is that I love how deep and heavy the movie took us, and how it showed the depth of depression. (Just my opinion...of course.) The tension in the movie was great; to me it showed the emotional tension that perhaps at times exist in real life yet unnamed. Just my two cents. :)

Did you guys know that that this same director directed Billy Elliot, too? Now, I love that one, too. (Go, Billy!)

Okay, must go pipe down. You guys are great.

My mom died by suicide, so the scene of the little boy screaming out for his mother as she drove off....well...I lost it. Cried and cried, of course. The whole movie was overwhelming for me. I've been on both sides of that equation, so it's all too familiar.

I knew it would be hard to watch, so I made all my girlfriends come with me. They cried even more than I did. Such sweeties. I think the movie did a good job of capturing the pain of depression, the solitude of its nature, and the impact of the desease on family.

I am so sorry your mom couldn't go past the desire to die. You are so special and wonderful. I hate that you had to face this in your teens....I hate that you had to have this in your life at all. I wish I could change life but all I can really do is say I care to totally about you now. I am there for you now. I really care.
