Hi Elle. It's good to see you back here. I like your idea of wearing pajamas under your slacks. I think I'll try that tomorrow!

Just make sure they aren't longer than your slacks. Also, try wearing two pairs of socks, that always helps me keep warm.

Oh, yes, thank you! Two pairs of socks and two pairs of gloves. My fingers and toes seem to be the most vulnerable. I like to wear a pair of gloves underneath a pair of mittens. I'm still looking for a good hat that adequately covers my ears. I hope this cold snap doesn't last too long.

Me too!! I have looked everywhere, but I don't look particularly good in hats. So I wear a head band (those kind like ear muffs only they aren't ear muffs...does that make any sense?). But then the top of my head is cold. I guess at this point I don't care what I look like as long as I'm halfway warm.

>I hope this cold snap doesn't last too long.

I second that. I have a doctor's app. on Tuesday and if the roads don't clear up I won't be able to go, and rescheduling is such a pain with my doctor!

Wearing pj's under jeans? [shaking my head]
I do wear the headband though, as I don't look good in hats either.

Now Elle, must we have a talk here? Do have I to go to (???) Buck, Idaho and find clothing that both keeps you warm and looks stylish? One thing that seems to help me a great deal is to drink a pot (or two) of coffee in the morning before I leave the house. I'll tell you what, I'm ready to leave in practically nothing! Also, a long, warm coat is a great advantage as well. Another tip kiddies, just don't leave the house if you can get out of it :)

I'm dreading getting out in the cold weather again. But for some reason, walking through campus with a red nose kinda puts a smile on my face. I rather enjoy the chilly weather. Call me crazy, just not to my face, but I do like being a bit chilly.

please send some cold over here

i finally went out and outfitted myself in winter active wear.

layers help:
on top: undershirt, long sleeve t-shirt (i still need to buy a fitness one), fleece, then waterproof jacket.
on bottom: long johns, pants, waterproof pants.

i'm all ready to go cross-country skiing, but it's raining in the ski area today :'(

please send some cold to me, i would like it. but not too cold - about -10 C would be perfect.

thanks!
your wet buddy

ask a canadian and you'll get a good answer!

mountain equipment co-op ships their toques (winter hats) internationally.

i like the hats with the ear flaps. here's one:

try your local outdoor gear shops - in the US, that would be a store like REI or a ski shop.

one last message

instead of pj's under pants, why not try thick winter tights? i found tights + pants to be suitable most days when i was walking to work in ottawa (-20 C temperatures + wind -- it was cold!)

I like wearing silk long johns....my goodness they are so soft, so pretty and so warm. I wear polar fleece as much as I can. I've got that hat. I love it. I like being toasty warm in the ice cold weather. Honestly with hot flashes my clothes steam....I am hot any where & at any time. It's actually uncomfortable....can you believe it??? I have seen my body put off steam.....what is going on??? My husband is cold and I am steaming.....I try to warm him as well. I do my best.

Hello Jai. Believe it or not, I'm actually looking forward to the day when I get hot flashes. I'm ALWAYS cold, and in this weather, I really can't thaw out. Yesterday was one of the worst. It was so bad that I didn't go out at all today. I felt almost sick last night. I just couldn't stop shivering. It's supposed to get warmer tomorrow, and then it's going to be very cold again later in the week.

Okay Karen.....
Now, let me just tell you that you can't even tell I'm wearing them under my pants. And I would never wear them to say...the doctor. But, it's super cold here and I don't own a pair of long johns! I thought about buying those knit tights that I used to wear when I was about 5, but I don't think they make them for adults!

>Also, a long, warm coat is a great advantage as well. Another tip kiddies, just don't leave the house if you can get out of it :)

I bought a new *black* coat two or three days ago. I originally bought a long one, but it looked odd on me, so I traded it for a shorter version.

When I was little my mum used to make me wear those thick (knit) tights under my pants during the winter, but now I can't find them in adult sizes! Where are they??

Elle, you don't mean Danskins, do you? You can still get Danskins in both children's and adult sizes, but perhaps that's not what you're referring to. Sometimes I wear Danskins or other thick tights under my slacks. Danskins are made well, and they tend to last longer than other opaque tights, such as "L'eggs" brands and others.

Yesterday my brain was frozen. Today my skin is so chapped from the cold outdoor air and the hot, dry indoor air that my skin is scaling and peeling. I think it's time to move to a better climate.

You know, I think I do mean Danskins. Now that I think about it, I used to wear them for ballet until I quit a few years ago.

Elle,

I am a figure skater, and we wear Danskins (there are other brands, too). But when it is really cold we often wear a heavier, warmer pair of "footless" tights over the Danskins. They are flesh colored, too, and really help on the colder days.

Check out some Skating sites (try http://www.rainbosports.com/shop/site/department.cfm?id=01FB7CBC-475A-BAC0-5EBA37EF93F47B07 - the Mondor footless tights).

Also, I really think I have seen the cable design heavy tights that I wore in grade school for adults - maybe LLBean or LandsEnd or some "earthy" distributor?

Hey Falls,
Thanks for the link!

> Also, I really think I have seen the cable design heavy tights that I wore in grade school for adults - maybe LLBean or LandsEnd or some "earthy" distributor?

Were they the really pink ones. I only remember them coming in pink. At the time I hated to wear them, but now I wish I had a pair. Sb417 made me think they might be Danskin, but these weren't regular "tight/nylon" material. So, I'm not sure again. Maybe I will just take myself to a department store or the ballet studio and see if they have them there.

Elle -

oops, i was snoozing
anyway, I got my tights in Canada at a plus-size store called Addition-Elle (nice name!)

The ones I used were actually not the woolen ones I remembered as a kid - but just thicker pantyhose (opaque).

Take fallsfall's advice - those figure skaters know what they're doing!

They do make thights for adults actually. I've seen them at Target and Old Navy, just to name a few places. With striking patterns to boot! And, if you wear long johns and pj's can't you see the lines (Oh no, panty lines! Gasp!)?? And if you walk super fast like I do, you don't get cold. But I guess I'm just so loaded on coffee that I don't pay attention to my pace, I just notice that I pass everyone by.
Now, you do know that when you wear your black coat you have to wear black shoes with it too, right? Do you have a brown coat to wear with your brown shoes? Am I the only person who ponders these questions?

I do walk superfast, but the problem is that when there is ice and slush and such, one is inclined to fall! So, I have to slow down, but not too much.

> Now, you do know that when you wear your black coat you have to wear black shoes with it too, right?

Okay...allow me to explain:
I bought the black coat, and was unable to locate my black shoes. SO, I did the unthinkable. Yes Karen, I wore my black coat with TAN boots. I guess this makes it official, I am crazy! In fact I have been complaining all week that I need to buy a new pair of black boots because I really can't find my other ones. Hopefully, this fashion faux pas will be fixed soon, lest I be labeled worst dressed by Karen Blackwell! :)

>Do you have a brown coat to wear with your brown shoes?

Actually, I wear a light teal coat with my brown shoes. It seems to go better than trying to find two browns that match.

Elle :)

I've been naughty and went shopping. I found a pair of black boots on sale for $39, marked down from $109! And I found another for $30, marked down from $80 something. I have endless pairs of black boots, but I have big feet (remember I'm tall), and they all have large heels on them as well. But, if you like I can send a pair your way? I also found a pair of brown boots on sale for $29, originally 69! I'm great at finding deals! And I love shoes! You can never have too many! Oh girl, I could talk shoes and boobs all day long!
