Anti Hero

Posted by kara lynne on January 9, 2004, at 1:29:30

Heroes, savior complexes, fallen heroes and hero worshippers. All of these positions disturb me.

Egos and high drama. In high school the really popular girls always had a bevvy of petulant protectors that no one dared challenge. If you went against one, you went against all, forever branded. The sum of the all much greater than the sum of its parts--feeding off all that energy.

The as*inine are being a**kissed. Indulgent behavior is admired--each person applauding the next for his, because it's for 'the cause' (their cause)-- while the angry crowd jeers at the offender. Who is more offensive?

but...
if the hero is kind and thoughtful?
only we can look after ourselves , some self induldgence is a must..
i had the "popular" image but threw it all away and lost the circle of protective friends..they did not make me less lonely nor more of a person..
we have the need to see or feel greatness..mabe if we cant find it in ourselves we look to others..

I guess it all depends on one's fluctuating vantage point.

Auntie Hero : )

I prefer my self-congratulation to be direct, rather than masquarading as benevolence.

i hope you are not angry?

its nice to be praised by who we are rather than what we have done..but how do you weigh character without looking at the past? is not our experiences forming us?
i prefer my self-congratulation to be direct as well

I suppose it depends on who thinks what is a cause and what is being self-indulgent.

Hitler was self-indulgent and had a cause.

So it must be bad...

But then again I wouldn't be living in the USA right now, because a bunch of angry, bitter, self-indulgent Puritans wouldn't have had the right/guts to leave the church. The church was the ONLY way back then, and people thought it was absolutely disgusting that these people were angry at their church.

See what I mean? It gets so complicated...

K_L, great thread, and I have a song that deals
with this topic. It's called "Nobody's Hero", and is actually based on true stories. The first in the opening is about a friend the writer grew up with, and taught him that homophobia was "wrong", and to keep an open mind about the topic. His friend had recently at the time (1994) died of AIDS. The second is about a popular case here in my hometown (where the writer was from), whereby a young girl named Kristen French was kidnapped, tortured, raped, and then killed in the most hideous way that is beyond words...and makes me deeply sad even now, 12 or so years after the incident. I hope you enjoy the words...I may even post the song eventually...

RUSH
Nobody's Hero

I knew he was different in his sexuality
I went to his parties as a straight minority
It never seemed a threat to my masculinity
He only introduced me to a wider reality
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that he was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But he's nobody's hero
Saves a drowning child
Cures a wasting disease
Hero -- lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero -- not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero -- not the glamour girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying,
Nobody's hero

I didn't know the girl, but I knew her family
All their lives were shattered in a nightmare of brutality
They try to carry on, try to bear the agony
Try to hold some faith in the goodness of humanity
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that she was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But she's nobody's hero
Is the voice of reason against the howling mob
Hero -- is the pride of purpose
In the unrewarding job
Hero -- not the champion player
Who plays the perfect game
Hero -- not the glamour boy
Who loves to sell his name
Everybody's buying
Nobody's hero

As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that you were gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But he's nobody's hero
Saves a drowning child
Cures a wasting disease
Hero -- lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero -- not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero -- not the glamour girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying..........
.......Nobody's hero

Upon a second thought... it's this self-indulgence that causes the cult mentality, which I think we can agree no one has found healthy yet.

You really have me thikning here...

I guess that emotions run high and people feel the need to get involved. To choose a side or stay out of the way. Is it better to voice your opinion or to sit down and stay out of the mess? I only wish I could say that I have the self control to shut my mouth when I need to but alas, I don't. A lesson learned I suppose. I'd say each is equally guilty! The jeering crowd only fuels the fire and the ego!

On the other hand,
You wouldn't go into McDonald's and demand wheat grass juice, even though you could argue for hours that it was much better for your health.
