I hope everyone in so.cal is ok

Posted by judy1 on October 27, 2003, at 11:36:26

I stayed up all night watching several fires within a mile of our home and ready to grab the kids and animals (what to do with my horse?) at the first sign of the blazes moving closer. This morning the sky is totally grey and the air is choking. My heart goes out to the people who have lost their homes (and some their lives). just wanted to check if everyone else in my vicinity is ok?
take care, judy

My text seems to have gone away. What I meant to say was that while SF is not currently affected (it is 400 miles or so to the north of LA), part of the SF Bay Area are still under "red flag" conditions. That is essentially the highest level of fire danger, so hopefully everyone will be careful and nothing will get started up here.

Hi judy,
You're even closer than I am--I'm so sorry. I just learned today that I'm in a possible evacuation area--it's unbelievable. I'm intentionally trying not to watch the news too much because it 's overwhelming, but I've got to be prepared. I'm a wreck over the wildlife, not to mention everything else.

I'm breathing the brown air and there's ash all over the place but thankfully I'm not near the flames.

not evacuated yet- but the smoke is thick and awful. we received a lot more help yesterday from other states so I think they're starting to get a handle on things. I probably won't post daily, but just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts, and my prayers are with my fellow southern californians- judy

Try not to worry about the wildlife too much, they are so resourceful. This morning we had about 20 quail chowing down bugs on the grass by our pool, and yesterday there was a 3 point buck sipping water from our pool (they must think it's an oasis)- my dogs are in another area and went totally nuts. I figure if they think it's safe to be here, then my family is probably safe. The flames were put out (by a helicopter dropping water) on the side of the mountain facing my house so they must have come from there. hope you haven't had to be evacuated, the police evacuated people from about one block away yesterday.
take care, judy

I didn't even know about the fires, I never watch news, etc. I will keep you and yours in my prayers...as well as the resourceful wildlife who enjoy your pool. How wonderful to be an oasis...to any living thing.

Thanks..I'm in Temecula--the Paradise fire is nearest to me...I took some spectacular pics from Palomar Mountain yesterday, but it's evacuated today. Here's the link if anyone wants to see some pictures of this devastating yet strangely beautiful phenomenon...

I'll be thinking of you. I was watching the news last night (or maybe the night before last), and it's just impossible to think of the magnitude of what's involved.

my neighborhood is all better today. I went out and the sky was blue! beautiful blue! after 2 days of dustmask brown haze air it was a wonderful sight. some mountain communities are still threatened though. it seems to be moving steadily northeast now.

Oh, I'm so relieved for you! Northeast? I'll have to get a map. I'm dreadful with geography, but the pictures of those who have lost everything really tugged at me. Especially since a family friend recently lost most of their belongings, and worse, a pet, to an unrelated fire. It really brings to earth how... oh i can't think of the word... intangible? fleeting? our sense of security is. Not to mention our belongings. :(

On the local news, one of the victims looking at her burnt house said something to the effect that her family was safe, and this was all just stuff.

I had a slightly similar epiphany watching the movie 28 days, where a guy wakes up and it seems all humanity is dead. It made me realize.. how would the meaning of 'stuff' be different if all the people were gone? Would you bother to go loot a jewelry store? Not at all. What stuff would have any meaning, beyond the practical value of food, shelter, and basic clothing? There would be nobody to impress with your stuff, or your pretty clothes, or your nice car. The only value would be basic survival, and finding other humans.
