does anyone else get hives??

Posted by Emmy333 on August 21, 2003, at 12:58:09

i have this horrible anxiety and everytime i get nervous i get an outbreak of red hives all over my chest, arms, and face--it's so bad that now i am constantly worrying about when they will re-appear. it's a daily struggle--i have started up on effexor for the anxiety and i am hoping that it will help keep the hives from coming back for a while. i only know 2 other people who get hives when they are nervous and one of them is my sister. anyone else out there?? i hate hives!!! they are ruining my life and they last for hours at a time!!! it's so bad that i avoid public places now.

i appreciate your understanding about it, but i don't feel like it's something to make a joke about--no offense, but this has driven me near insanity and back--it's no laughing matter. and i didn't find your "killer bee" comment to be very effective.

I should probably keep my nose out of this, and I can't speak for JYL, but I really don't think she meant anything by the killer bee statement. I didn't perceive it that way, anyway.

As for hives, I have known others who get hives when they get anxious - my grandmother for one. I assume you take an antihistamine? I'm sure you've talked to your doc about it - what has been recommended in the past?

Hi,

I don't know much about hives, but I have heard weird stuff like ibuprofen can cause them. Is there a possibility something other than anxiety is causing them? Or maybe something else in your life, coupled with the anxiety, is making them worse?

My ex used to get them occasionally and couldn't link them to anything specific. He started taking an antihistamine at night (just OTC Benadryl), every night, even if he didn't get hives. It acted kind of like a preventive measure and worked for him.

Might be worth a try as long as they don't interact badly with Effexor..

Good luck.

S.

How awful. I had hives once and I thought I'd go out of my mind from the itching. Of course it took me 2 days to learn that benadryl helps. ( My case wasn't purely anxiety, it was a reaction to a scented bath oil from the body shop.) You have my sympathy. Sorry I don't have any answers.

Even topical Extra Strength Benadryl cream will help. You could carry it around with you.

Emmy333,

I just discovered this forum, saw your post and felt compelled to respond so you know that other people also suffer from anxiety induced hives.

As long as I can remember, I have had the problem of hives mainly on my feet/legs when something causes me to be very anxious. They go away within hours of calming back down and they never have been in a place where others could see them so I have just lived with it. I understand your struggle and wish I had a great solution to offer but I do not. I have recently started treatment again for anxiety/depression and the Dr. has given me Remeron to try (only 1 week so far). It does seem to help calm me down but is making me very sleepy. I took Effexor years ago with some benefit but not enough to stay on the drug.
I hope you get some relief and understand that there definately are others of us with the problem.

Regards,

thanks sooo much for your post, robertnc, it is sooo comforting to know that someone else understands what i am going through. i just cannot believe that there is no known medical treatment to directly treat this symptom. and thanks to everyone else who posted w/ some advice on what i should try to do. benadryl is not effective for me. i am seeing a therapist and doing the effexor with the hopes that treating the anxiety will help me to treat the hives. thanks again for everyone's concerns. i am so glad that i have discovered this message board.

I hope your combination of therapy and the Effexor will help you regain control of your life. Just try to be patient since the full benefit sometimes takes a number of weeks and possible adjustments to the dosage to get it "right". My only other advice is to try to remember that the "event" that is causing the anxiety is never as bad as it seems during the period of highest anxiety. (At least for me this was always true. Not easy to remember, but true.)
Good luck.
