hot!!!!!!!!

Posted by Penny on July 16, 2003, at 12:57:00

I'm melting!!!! Just got back from walking to lunch (as I don't have a car on campus due to lack of parking) and it is SOOOO hot out there!

Even though I think air conditioning gives me headaches, I am so thankful! My office is a bit too warm for my liking, but feels like winter compared to outside. Ugh.

No real reason for posting this - just thought I'd share.

I understand, my work keeps the air on so low that I have to wear a sweater sometimes...

Penny, you should come by my lab sometime if you really want to cool off! My goodness, they set the air so low in here because the computers evidently get too hot! What about the people getting too cold?

Like Giget said, I also have taken to bringing an extra layer.

You know, I thought it would be so hot in the south, I would be dying all the time. But I think that we northerners are possibly better at handling the heat because we don't have all this ice cold AC blasting at you everywhere - well, okay, it's in all the public places for the most part.

Yeah, I guess I could go downstairs in the room where they keep the servers - it's icy in there!!! It's cooler on the first floor anyway - it's just up here in my lonesome third floor hideaway... :-(

I do have to keep a sweater for the winter though b/c it's cold in here all the time, and I keep here in the summer because I use it as a pillow when I need to nap! lol.

I don't think it's so much the heat down here as it is the humidity. I do believe I would be happier (environmentally speaking) in the north. Oh well - you deal with what you have, right?

It's humid up north though, too.

Yeah, you might be happier up there in the summer - but then the winter comes around (from about late Oct through April-ish!), and you have to deal with the frigid snowstorm-every-week horridness. That's a big part of why I wanted to escape the northeast, at least for a while and maybe forever. But I'll always be a northern girl at heart!

I love the snowstorms. Sometime around mid-February I decide I've had enough snow.

where do you live if you don't mind telling me?

Oh I thought snowstorms could be quite pretty and fun for a while, but then the snow gets dirty. You have to drive (I hate driving in the snow!). And I think maybe it's the coldness that bothers me more than anything else. And the LENGTH of the winter! The days getting dark at 4:30. If the winter up north only went on for a month or two, I might like it more!

I don't mind the snow, we just don't get enough of it. Driving can be a pain cause all those big suvs think they'll be able to stop on a dime and I need to watch out for their "driving skills".

Anyway, the snow I love the best comes in late March or early April (once we had 12 inches on May 7th). It will snow buckets all night and then by 3pm most of it's melted and never got a chance to change to grey.

Monday, we had to drive 3-4 hrs to NY and I needed to bring afghans for all the complainers to use so I could be cool enough to drive. Even in temperature control, I seem to be out of sync.

I live and grew up in Middle New England.

I learned to drive in the snow, so it doesn't phase me at all. I love to drive at night when the snow is coming down really heavy, noone else is on the back road I'm on, and the snow looks like it is coming straight at you in your headlights.

It does get dirty after a while, and that's a shame - just means we need another storm.

The dark afternoons are depressing, but it does make me appreciate the summer more.

Sadly, I "learned" to drive in the snow, too. I've gotten better about not freaking out about it - I used to be so tense when driving or even when someone else was driving. But I think that the issue for me may be that I was somewhat traumatized by an accident early in my driving career in which I went off the road and totalled my car. I wasn't hurt though, but it really scared me!

I love the quiet of the snow though. Like, outside it just seems so serene and stuff.

I learned to drive in the snow, too--my road test was during a snowstorm.
