Shar,

> I'm not sure to make of "no need to stay down there." If I had control of it, I would not be down here. If a ladder, or med, or good thoughts made a difference, I would not be here (it sure does not feel like a choice!). So, I'll add it to my list of other conundrums.

Yeah, I hear what you are saying, Shar. I was concerned when I wrote my previous post that my quick note might give the impression that I was oversimplifying the severity of the problem and/or trivializing the feeling of powerlessness regarding escape from the abyss.

Like you, I also have experienced that feeling of inescapable helplessness while being drawn deeper and deeper into the quicksand of depression with no apparent means to reverse the gradient. I find it interesting that it is soooo much easier and faster to spiral down than it is to spiral up. Therefore, it was not my intent to suggest that one can merely “climb out” of a depressive state. Instead, I was just trying to do some cheerleading. I care about you as a fellow traveler on this road.

For me, when I am in the depth of depression induced despair, I become very pessimistic and I convince myself that I will be stuck in the depressive state for ever. The truth of the mater is that, although I can’t climb out using a ladder, I can take baby steps that can help somewhat. Some of the things that help me (to some extent) include exercise, a good diet, vitamins and supplements, daily spiritual renewal, healthy interpersonal relationships, meds, and a positive attitude. The thing is, when I’m depressed I don’t want to do any of this crap! However, if I take baby steps in these areas it seems to help.

Best wishes, Shar. If I can help you in any way, please let me know.

Ron,
Thanks, I understand much better now. Your ideas of ways to spiral up are definitely ones to aim for. Never know--you might hear from me again when the darkness lifts!

I couldn't quite follow what led up to all of this, but I'm sorry to hear you're not doing well no matter what the cause.

I just wanted to add my support. I have so much appreciation for people who shoot from the hip (I never quite understood that expression and I'm probably saying it wrong, but you know what I mean--I hope!) and you have always been a strong, clear and true voice for me here. Just plain real, which is the best deal around as far as I'm concerned. That you also happen to be very nice doesn't hurt either.

You deserve to feel better. I hope you do soon.

To actually shoot from the hip means to pull your gun from the holster around your waist and fire immediately without raising the gun to eye-level and aiming - you know, like in a Clint Eastwood western. (I loooove Clint Eastwood.)

The expression 'to shoot from the hip' in the sense you intended means, I believe, that an action or statement is quick and straight-forward, no messing around.

Hang in there, Shar, be good to yourself and come back when you're feeling better.

-Gracie, the fountain of useless trivia

Thanks, KL, WR

Being a Texan I can't help but appreciate the metaphor. However, my holster has slipped to somewhere around my knees at the moment, which means I'm still a steady aim--just don't know where I'm headed.

Feeble attempt at humor, but accurate all the same.

Thanks for your well wishes,
Shar

Shar

I'm sorry to hear that you're doing so badly. I'm sort of there myself or I'm sure I could offer something more constructive. My therapist did remind me that I felt great about 10 days ago and that being the case, I shouldn't view my current malaise as being permanent.

Are you sure you're not just suffering from heat stroke? I've never been to Texas, but I imagine it as being like a blast furnace this time of year. You Texans must be made of sterner stuff.

(((( ))))

If your holster is around your knees, does that mean your pants are too?? ;-) Just think, you're mooning everyone. hehe
My own feeble attemp at humour too.
Lots of love to you Shar and huge cyber-hugs.

I really hope this is just a momentary return to the abyss. Make sure to let your significant other tempt you to eat. And the meds problem has to be a major part of the problem. Can't your pdoc help in any way? Or the drug companies programs? Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sure you've tried all the possible answers. It's just that nasty helpless feeling, you know? Gives me a great desire to offer something useful.

I'm really sorry about all the misunderstandings lately everywhere on Babble. So much hurt all around. :(

Phil is still around. He posted on PB 2000 a few days ago; his usual self it seems. And, of course, I mean that in a good way!

Shar,

I think we'd all worry if Phil got unusual! And like you I mean that in the best possible way. But not being a Texan I hope you can translate my Californian to him if he takes any slight by my post. His wit is much missed.

heh...I got a good chuckle out of this. Thanks. On a more technical note, the pants stay up because I have a waistband that's a bit too tight, giving me a slightly sausage-shaped appearance, and leaving an imprint around my midsection that lasts for days. Ah, how I miss my elastin.....

Hope you feel less alone. Please email me if you like, tho' I warn you (and everybody) I am pretty bad at all types of correspondence. I also don't answer my phone, and my doormat says GO AWAY (it was a gift from a friend who knew me well).

Take good care,
Shar

Shar, hope the depression starts to lift soon.

I enjoyed the cowboy humor--yours and Tina's.

**That was the point. I'm glad it worked!

I also don't answer my phone, and my doormat says GO AWAY (it was a gift from a friend who knew me well).

***when I'm down, I'm just like that too. I HATe the phone. It's an infernal contraption. Then again, it doesn't ring much anyway.

My phone is ALWAYS in the off position, unless I call someone and am expecting a call back IMMEDIATELY. I hate the sound of it. I just check messages and caller ID every once in a while. Helps me feel more in control.

I'm with you. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to have the answering machine on and not be able to hear the messages. It doesn't come with a stealth mode.

And what you said reminded me that I can also go days without checking my mail. Partly, right now, it's because I just seem to get bills I can't pay, but generally it's because I vant to be (left) alone.
