Message from the void (jury duty)

Posted by Tabitha on February 19, 2003, at 9:22:46

Hi,

I think my prayers have been answered. I was so needing a break from work, even considering trying to get a medical leave, but instead I got on a 2-week jury trial. I dutifully tried to check in to read my work email (probably have over 100 messages by now) only to find the company website is down so I can't get my email. The gods are smiling on me. They are. I know there will be a mess when I get back to work, but for now, peace.

Nothing to do for 2 weeks (plus deliberation time) but show up on time and fight boredom. So during this time, I'll get a break from stress, my sleep cycle will become regulated (due to 9-5 days), I'll get more exercise than normal (walking to lunch) and the carpal tunnel stuff in my arms will likely heal up. Ahhhh. Just what the doctor ordered.

WHat has my life become that jury duty is an adventure and a vacation to me? Then again, who cares. I need the break.

:-)

cool Tabitha. If you see it as a break, then more power to ya! Getting away from one's life even for jury duty is still getting away right?
Enjoy!!

And don't the courts pay you something like $5.50 a day plus meals and mileage? You have indeed hit the Mother Lode Tabitha!

I am really jealous. I haven't had a real vacation in almost 3 years... Enjoy! :)

'Twas not criminals, 'twas executives fighting their former boss over bonuses, severence pay, and stock options (millions of dollars worth! on top of millions they'd already received!) It was going to be fun watching these guys duke it out and learn all the juicy facts and numbers. Such greed. I was really enjoying the sense of power. How cool that us ordinary folks would get to decide these guy's multi-million dollar fates.

Now I'm off the jury duty roster for 3 years :-(

They're just another variety of criminal!! (nm) » Kar

Darn it!!

I dutifully go to jury duty every time I've gotten called and in all the times I've gone they've called maybe two panels. There will be eight cases or so scheduled and all get settled/plea bargained before trial. So they thank us and tell us that we were valuable because the defendent wouldn't have settled if there hadn't been enough folks to pick a jury. Couldn't they just have had us on standby?

But my husband got to serve twice!!

well.....shit! Maybe something else will come along. All that "breeze from one door closing opening another" stuff. I dunno.
I hope you get another break soon Tabi. That would have been a juicy case to watch. It might have come to blows or a Jerry Springer type moment...haha

Haha, that's exactly the spiel the judge gave us when he dismissed us. Said they wouldn't have settled if it hadn't been for us. That the shock of facing 14 strangers had prompted the settlement. I found it a little patronizing, since I figured the truth was they changed their minds based on the opening arguments.

Woo-boy, it would've been fun to see executives trading blows. CEO Boxing! Thanks for your good thoughts, Tina.

Yabut, Tabitha, we need more citizens like you who are willing to sit for jury duty. Most people do everything they can to avoid it. I even know people who don't register to vote just to avoid having jury duty!

So power to you for your civic eagerness!!

But sorry your adventure was cut short.
