How to tell when today is going to be manic

Posted by Tony P on February 16, 2003, at 14:55:32

You know today is going to be one of your "manic" days when…

Between bed and the shower you check out 5 CDs to get exactly the right bouncy music to shower to...

While showering, you notice the grunge on the shower curtain (it's been there for a month at least), so since you're in the shower already, you might as well clean it…

You've got your entire day planned before you've finished washing your hair…

While drying your hair, you add 10 MORE items to your mental to-do list...

You weigh yourself three times, stepping on the back, middle and front of the scales, and take the number you like best…

At 7:30, not yet dressed, you phone someone you borrowed $20 from three years ago, just to get it off your conscience…

You figure out what's been wrong with the way the office has been run for the last year, and rehearse how you're going to tell the boss -- both sides of the conversation …

You figure out what's been wrong with your spouse for the last year, and rehearse both sides of the conversation …

By 8:05 you've made three major financial decisions and implemented them on the computer … still in the nude…

Your wardrobe seems overwhelmingly huge - how to choose? so you pick the brightest and most flamboyant outfit 'cause that's just how you FEEL today...

In fact, you're feeling so great, you make a full pot of coffee -- then forget to drink any of it…

You make four more phone calls while crunching your cereal, and tie your shoelaces while eating your toast…

By 10 to 9 you've cleaned the whole apartment…

Somewhere between the shower and getting dressed, you write a list of "You know today is going to be one of your "manic" days when…".

That's priceless! Too funny.

I could use one of those super-productive days right now.

I like your post. It all sounds like me when I am manic. Some say if you're manic, you don't realize it, only other people around you do. I do realize it. I get this "aura" before, and almost know when its going to happen. I'm aware of the mania the entire time. I just can't control it, and don't feel the need to at the time. After it is all over with and I'm exhausted, I realize that I had made a fool of myself in front of people, and made horrible decisions on an impulse. I realize, I had grandiose feelings, and thoughts, and that I was much more talkative and flirty. I'll tend to wear something a little more provocative than usual, and feel like a supermodel.

Like I said though, I know when I'm manic, or going to be.

Oh, but now my new pdoc tells me that I'm not bipolar, I have ADD, I have both, I'm sure of it!!!

Is today one of your manic days??

Jodie

Today was one of my manic days, not physically, no no thats too much for me, but mentally, yes today was manic! Last night an old school friend phoned me. Itwas so nice to hear from her. I decided that i must try and track down my long lost school friends. I even had a dream about school last night! So I have been on the net all day today, must be like fifty or more sites I have tried, then I suddenly realised after no success and hours of trying (at this point I have square eyes!) that I never really got on very well with the people Im looking for anyway! Im feeling rather foolish :-) Im used to this feeling. I usually shop on websites when im manic, buy expensive useless things, have run out of money now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. I think this has been a manic night/morning - I woke up at 5 AM or so and have been on the computer ever since looking at alternative A/Ds, papers on akathisia, and browsing and posting here. (Not following my own advice on the insomnia thread to avoid TV & computers!).

I'm not sure I'm truly bipolar, but I am on Wellbutrin (low dose). It sent me into full-blown mania before when I was on the standard 300mg/da. Even at 100 mg./da I find it extremely activating. Also I am in the process of getting off other drugs. Time will tell.

Maybe you should put that credit card away!!! :-)
I know, much easier said than done.

I have done all of that before, trying to locate so many people from my past, like on classmates.com.

I will pick up the phone, and just start calling so many people. When they try and get off the phone, I'll just keep talking. My best friend has just learned when to hang up on me. I gave her permission when I am not manic. Of course she'll call back later to check up on me.

Wishing you the best (I hope you left yourself a little bit of money).

I wonder if amazon has caught onto this. How many books have you bought (and not read) because of that all to easy double click feature?

You are funny!!! Sometimes it does seem normal. Right now normal for me is depression :-( ... and of course insomnia. Yuck, I may love snow, but I can't wait for summer. I always go through depression in the winter!

Jodie -

I too get "bluer" in the winter and invariably gain 10 lbs. "Hibernation weight" I suppose. :-) Most years I lose all of it when summer finally comes, but sometimes . . . not.

Sorry you're on the down cycle. Hope you find your balance again soon. Will send warm fuzzy calm thoughts your way. Like a life sized psychic teddy bear, how's that image work for you?

Oh, BTW, I love the snow snow snow, but hate avoiding the idiots driving 70 mph in it. Stupid thoughtless people annoy me. Some days for me really are like the "you know you're manic when" post, and some days I can hardly get out of bed. I love my life, but some days I hate it. I love my job, but some days want to run away screaming. I love my boyfriend, but some days I think he's a ridiculously obstinate moody testosterone machine and WHO NEEDS HIM??? (But not today. He didn't trip over any of my buttons today. Notice I said trip over, not push -- they are my buttons and I take responsibility for them being triggered. I just wish I could disarm them.)

Some days I think I'm a ridiculously fraudulent phony pretending to know what I'm doing in life, other days I know it's a miracle I've come as far as I have. What I can't decide is, which one is real? Or are both? Or are they just moods? What's the secret of life? Is there a secret? Is there life? or are we all just living in a train station locker waiting for Tommy Lee Jones to open the door?

And I *still* really want PIZZA!

(if a craving doesn't go away for a week, is it really a craving? or "pizza deficiency"???)

<grin>

Hope you find something soon to help your sleep situation. I'm not sure which comes first for me, not sleeping or feeling depressed, but the two are definitely linked. Like some others, the physical exhaustion "work out till you drop" works well for me as long as I do it in the morning. If I wait until evening, I'm too wired to sleep before 3 am and that will never do since I work daylight hours. :-) How did you sleep after your playing in the snow? Better I hope.

Oh, it's too late again, and too many miles to go before I sleep. Kitties to snuggle, dishes to do. Goodnight!

I just read your post. I will give a more lengthy reply tomorrow. I think I'm going to try and go to sleep....hahahaha...I had to laugh. I am kidding myself, sleep, how funny. I think I'm getting sick though, a sore throat. My fiancee has strep throat now. I'm sure I caught it. My body aches all over. I also have a slight fever. I'm going to lay down, even if I can't sleep.

You can do my dishes too, I'll let you....lol.

Talk (type) to you tomorrow!!!! Goodnight.

I DO go on shopping sprees, but luckily I've managed to avoid Amazon ... so far. But I did hit that fatal last click on a order of exotic herbs the other day.

I like to buy locally, so I ran up a bill one day for $120 on CDs, then found two of them I didn't like at all. So then I went to the second-hand store with those & a few others, meaning to sell them for cash, as I'm cashflow challenged at present. But then I said "credit" at the crucial point, so I walked out with 6 more CDs. Is that manic or just impulsive??

I also have been buying furniture that I "need", but that could easily have been postponed for a few months.
