I need to get to sleep!!!!!

Posted by jodie on February 3, 2003, at 2:13:00

It's going after 3 am where I live, I think I will be calling my pdoc tomorrow, this has been a problem for a little while. I can sleep for 8 or more hours once I get to sleep. But that's my problem, getting to sleep!!!

Any suggestions? I have Ambien, lost cause, it only worked for 5 days, tried trazadone, Dalmane, and other benzos. Benadryl doesn't make me sleepy anymore. What next? A major tranqualizer of some form???

I just want to go to sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I'm being whiney. I get like that, especially at 3:15 IN THE MORNING!!!!! GRRRRRR......

Hope everyone else is sleeping like babies right now, must be nice. ;-)

Hi Jodie,

It happens to me sometimes, although I have more trouble staying asleep than getting asleep. The best thing I've found to do is a sort of meditation while I lay quietly. If that doesn't work I just get up and do something that I need to do. Usually just the thought of doing something I don't want to do puts me out. But, as I said, falling to sleep isn't my major sleep problem.

I read something interesting tho, just today. Seems that they did a study where they taped the brain waves of people and made tapes out of them. People who listened to tapes of their own brainwaves as opposed to someone else's fell to sleep on average in 17 minutes rather than 50 someodd minutes for people who listened to someone else's.

Can you imagine if they ever are able to do something useful with that? A drug free sleep aid. Could be a problem for couples though. They'd have to wear headphones or something to bed.

Hope you get some sleep soon.

Dinah,

Interesting article. A drug free sleep aid...that would be nice! Yes, could be a problem for couples.

Nice to hear from you!!!

Thanks

Two nights in a row to have company in the wee hours. Sorry for the reason, but nice to see you.

I had a migraine last night and fell asleep without taking my meds. :( So I'm up and about.

I know this sounds pretty obvious but my suggestion is simply LOG OFF THE NET and do it BEFORE MIDNIGHT, preferably even earlier...AT LEAST 1 to 2 hours before you actually step into bed.....you need to break the habit of staying on the net till 3.00am. This is an EXTREMELY stimulating activity that no benzo or tranquilizer can overcome unless you nearly overdose on the stuff. I'm speaking from personal experience. Even the most graphic horror movie showing on tv at night is less stimulating than spending time at PSB. I can't even begin to explain why this is so but I think it's just a plain fact. Somehow people lose their concept of time when logged onto the net!

The best thing is to try and get your natural sleep cycle fixed up...you can't force it and will probably need to make incremental changes...even going to bed and getting up 15 minutes earlier each day or maybe even every second day or even on a weekly basis.

Next, get out into natural daylight as soon as you wake up and spend as much time as you can in natural daylight during the day. Then as soon as it gets dark avoid bright light. Candle light or lights with dimmers giving a nice romantic atmosphere are the best....it's all got to do with your melatonin production cycle being out of whack and these tips will assist your natural circadian rythms and melatonin production (fancy term for your wake/sleep cycle in case you didn't know)

JUST go to bed, even if you don't sleep immediately or sleep restlessly it's still better for you than staying on the net. If you can't sleep get youself a little portable CD player with atimer and listen to some of your favourite relaxing music. Even if your not sleeping your still doing yourself some good. It took me years to accept that my poor sleep habits were aggravating my mental well being in a very negative way

> Sorry I'm being whiney. I get like that, especially at 3:15 IN THE MORNING!!!!! GRRRRRR......

Your not being whiney, Most of us have been there and done that. In fact a lot of posters on PSB still do exactly what you do (These posters know who they are....DREAMER!!!! and I can add more names to this list if you like but I'm very interested to see if these people FESS up themselves)

In fact I had a slight relapse last week and stayed up till 3.00am writing emails and posting on this board and believe me it seriously affected my mood the next day even though I still got my 8 hours sleep.

> Hope everyone else is sleeping like babies right now, must be nice. ;-)

NOPE.....I'm WIDE awake at the moment....it's daylight and the sun is shining brightly in my part of the world right now.....it's summer too (I'm not gloating.....really!!!! Trust me!!!!)

I emphasise that the single worse thing you can do to make sleep difficult for you is to spend too much time on the net at night.

NOW....GO TO BED. If you actually read this post before at least 8 hours have passed you are being a very naughty girl:) :).

good luck

I unfortunately don't keep a regular enough sleep schedule. Usually 10 or 11, but if I get involved doing work or a hobby, way later than that. I need to work on my eating habits too. :(

Not me, I was asleep before 10. Just forgot to take my meds and are waiting for them to kick in.

Even with my meds I often wake from a dead sleep by bolting out of my bed, heart pounding, etc. in the middle of the night. I mean bolting, half way across the room before I'm fully awake. I tend to get late night anxiety attacks. Then I have to calm down a bit before heading back.

Goodnight, I'm off to bed, going to sleep, that may not happen though. I'm sure I can figure something to do while just laying there :-)

What a sad face Dinah :)

I agree, getting the discipline to actually follow good advice is THE hardest part of all and then to do these things really regularly.

Dinah, your being naughty too..I hope you don't have to get up early [this morning) :):)]

I used to get that too....sometimes still do. Once I found myself standing at the other side of the room because I thought I had little spiders crawling all over me..pretty weird hey?

I hope your meds kick in soon!!!

Hmmph. You'd be scowling too if you were facing a life of small balanced low carbohydrate meals. I'm one of those feast or famine people by nature. I'd rather eat nothing all day, and one enjoyable meal, than eat three healthy meals.

Meds are starting to kick in, so I'm off to bed. Head is starting to hurt again, too, though. Darn it.

jodie, this has been an issue with me for years but has gotten a bit better. I too agree that the net is stimulating and tv will bore you to sleep. I do this. kill comp at 11--watch for posts at 3am tonight...lol, turn off light and watch tv on the couch after meds and chamile tea and a hot shower. When I am just about to doze off< I grab my cat and run to bed. "we" settle in and i read a bit while she is still settling in ; usually sleep has been better...i stress usually though.

I have triend so mant sleep meds and found that a combo of ambien and visteral (persription benadrilbasically but doc writes it b/c ins covers it then. night!!

Tony,

Thank you very much for the advice, although I have myself a spiced Chai tea!! :-)

TV, does not work for me, for some reason I am addicted to channel surfing.

I do grab my 2 cats, my 2 big dogs (well they have to walk)....Oh and I can't forget my fiancee, and head to bed when I "try" and go to sleep. :-)

I shouldn't even be here posting...its 2:10 am here...I'm a bad girl!!!

I will go to bed...soon!!

Thanks again

Jodie
