FireLogic Inc. has released the Depression version of its HealthEngage software. The software is intended for sufferers of depression who are looking for a computer-based tool to better manage their condition.

Building on the framework FireLogic has produced for other HealthEngage products for the management of diet and fitness, diabetes, asthma and HIV/AIDS, HealthEngage Depression works with Palm OS-compatible PDAs as well as PocketPCs. Native for Mac OS X, the software is optimized for 10.2.3. FireLogic said it's working on a version that will support Rendezvous and iSync to work with Bluetooth-enabled devices, too.

HealthEngage Depression enables you to collect, graph and produce reports you can review with your doctor. It includes a nutrition database of over 6,700 foods, exercise information with more than 700 physical activities listed, and can track sleep quality and quantity.

You can also use HealthEngage Depression to set reminders for appointments and prescription refills, and use it to track laboratory test results and more.

New versions to cover issues like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fybromyalgia, Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis and more are expected to be released in the next few weeks, according to FireLogic. HealthEngage Depression costs US$59.99 for the single user desktop version, and $10 more for the desktop version paired with Palm or PocketPC software.

Hey Phil...

This made me smile because most folks in the throes of major depression won't be this organized (or motivated) to plot graphs and track exercise (let alone exercise to begin with!). What an odd device.

That's hilarious, Phil. Does it come with a little assistant to keep track of all those things?

I was complaining about my bad memory the other day, and my therapist suggested I start writing everything everyone said to me so that I wouldn't forget. He obviously didn't understand that would require a full understanding at the time I was speaking to someone that a) I was having a conversation and b) that I might need this information later. I think sometimes people don't grasp the magnitude of the difficulty. They start at what they think is step one, but they need to move back four or five steps to actually be useful.

Sorry. Tangent.

Well, the assumption that depressed people have the energy, ability, and/or motivation to eat, exercise, sleep, keep appointments, etc. and then enter that information into a computer does bring a smile to my face.

Maybe I'm the exception but, when in hell, I kept copious notes via a calendar. It did two things for me. First, for me, depression almost required me to see the world as black and black forever, the notes helped me to see the ups and downs. Second, as I was making the rounds in search of competent medical help, the notes were as close as I could come to providing objective information to the latest doc as to what had failed (or briefly succeeded) in the past, as well as a tracking of the symptoms. I have to admit that I was obsessive about it. I was unable to work, function in society and my only job was to get well because without recovery, I would not live. I'd lost everything else and my only hope was recovery. I'm not much of a techno-person so mine was manual, but my husband has diabetes (and he's an android) and uses one of these devices.

Like Coral, I could use something like this. I'm not an anal-retntive person generally, but I can be about some things. Plus this weird perfectionist streak in me that never can fulfill itself, I like the idea of that software. Now whether I'd make use of it & stick to it is another matter completely.

Actually, I've gotten physicals every year and always forward a copy to my pdoc. Hopefully they look at the results. I also keep hard copies of blood work cause it's interesting to me.
And...keeping a diary of all my combos, when I took them, etc. would be great.
They have units like these coming out for cancer and fibromyalgia.

The thing that cracked me up was that it has 700 activities listed and 6400 foods. But, it makes more sense now that I've thought of it.
I wish I could track how much money I've spent on mental health in the last 20 years.

I can see it being especially useful for diabetes.

LAUGHING!!! I could never find myself so organized to do all of this. Especially since I am depressed with ADD. But I'm impressed its Mac compatible. I'm a Mac user, thats my biggest problem, not much software is available. It has gotten a little better in the past year.

I agree this "gadget" strikes me as FUNNY!!!

I like it. But I do a lot of this on my own. Like every day I write down goals and what I've done towards those goals that day. For example, on the calendar I write what exercise I've done that day (if any) and put a slash through the day if I did no exercise. It's simpler and cheaper.
