DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!!!

Posted by Angel Girl on April 28, 2002, at 14:55:12

I have been SERIOUSLY procrastinating on doing my income tax return which has to be postmarked by the lastest tomorrow. I haven't even looked at it yet. Normally it is very easy for me to do but that was before this depression took over my brain. The very thought of doing it is totally OVERWHELMING!!!!

AND to make matters worse, I CAN'T FIND MY CALCULATOR!!!!!!!

HHHHHHEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!! :(

My calculators are very cool--bright orange, blue, green. Got 'em for a buck at Dollar Tree.

What's the IRS like? Here in Canada, they always redo your forms anyway so I know a number of people who just send them in with some slightly credible figures scrawled in along with receipts, etc & Revenue Canada does it for them. Can you try that?

Unless you're likely to get money back & the IRS would fudge results & keep it? I hear such horror stories about the IRS - here in Canada, they're almost too easy on people (though they still take a big chicnk out of taxes).

Doesn't Accessories on your computer Programs have a calculator?

Dollar Tree???? If there is a money tree somewhere, I sure would like to see it. hahaha :) Sorry, couldn't resist.

IsoM

I am in Canada. I'll have to try something. I do usually get money back so the thought of having to pay is not why I'm procrastinating. It's the 'mental' part of it. Too taxing. Pardon the pun. I think there should be a calculator on here. I'll have to go find it. Hope that's not as hard as trying to find my REAL calculator. :(

BTW, it is now after 7:00 pm and still I haven't looked at it. <sigh>

Well, remember it's not 'me' that told you this - but stuff everything in the envelope & just send it.

Did you know that legally in Canada, if WE owe the government money, we're penalised if we don't file our taxes on time, but if THEY owe us money, we're NOT penalised for being late in filing? I was really late one year & when I got my money back, it had actually accumulated interest & I was paid the interest too.

Put all your receipts (t-4s etc, rrsp info, etc etc) in the envelope, seal the envelope, don't put a return address and don't put a stamp on it and mail it. That easy! My first two years being ill I completed our tax returns, poor revenue Canada kept calling all summer trying to figure my figures out.

If you don't feel comfortable with the above method you can call an 800 number and request where you can get help from a volunteer to fill them out. And then there's always the option of paying someone like H&R to do it. Agh!!

Here it is 2:44 am and I'm FINALLY finished my taxes. <sighs> BUT had a view crisis doing it. My first one was that I couldn't find my T4. Without that you can't do anything. After tearing my apartment apart and finally finding it and getting to almost the end, I then couldn't find my Property Taxes for last year to see how much I paid. Finally found that too and it is now complete. EXCEPT, I need to change my bank info for the direct deposit. I closed the account that they have on record and I don't even bank with the same bank anymore. I want them to mail me the cheque and now I find I need a special form for that. And as you can guess, I do NOT have that form. <sigh> I'm sending it in anyway, attached a little love note for them to mail me cheques and I'll have to obtain the form later and send it in separately.

Some day I have to get this procrastination under control. Life would be so much easier. :(

Thanks for everybody's help. Very much appreciated.

Angel, going to relate a tax story of mine. My ex- hadn't filed his tax forms for 6 years when we separated. This meant that I wasn't able to receive GST & whatever it is that the government gives as a refund to moms with little kids (the name escapes me) or anything else.

After he left, I wanted to be able to file my forms & receive my money, but when I phoned the help-line I was told they could do nothing until I had he filled his forms out for those years. I phoned again & was told his info was strictly confidential & I was powerless. They'd decide to go after him when they felt like it & seeing nothing had been done for the previous 6 years, they were in no hurry.

BUT I did have his SIN so I filled out my forms as best as possible & attached a note saying I couldn't include other info as I didn't know what it was but here was my ex-husband's SIN. Within a month, I received about $3,000 dollars back from all those years & they went after him. With the money, I paid for my first year tuition, bought a reasonable computer, & some second-hand furniture to sit on for the living room (we were using the floor).

Yes, the government can do amazing things with a little impetus.

WOW!!! That must have been very FRUSTRATING, especially since you needed the money. Exs can be a royal pain. LOL!!!

I'm glad it all worked out and you got your money. Looks like you spent it very wisely too.

Hi Isom ,

That's good news about getting the refund. I've had
problems with getting taxes in on time and in the US
you can file an extension. This lets you send the paperwork
later and you pay an estimated amount. I way overpay
and the US government also has laws such that it is OK
to file later *if* the goverment owes you money (they get
the interest). But being in depression sucks, I can barely
keep track of my bills much less all the paperwork mess
for taxes. Just need to bite the bullet and get a good
tax man.

Take Care,
John

It helps, John, that I've never made enough to ever owe the government. That, & the fact I have a friend who's learned about taxes, the government, & in/outs of it all like the back of her hand. Something I do is to keep a small box or container that's handy by the box where I keep my keys, interact card, driver's license, etc (I never use a purse). Then, when I come home & drop them off, I can just stuff any papers or receipts into through an opening into the separate box. That way I can sort through them when I can. Even if I don't get to it for a couple of months, it's still all there. But then again, I rarely have much to deal with or keep track due to the simple life-style I choose.

Out of curiousity, is the IRS really the ogre I've heard it to be? Or only in special cases? And do they have the rights that I've heard of?
