SURVEY: which of these applies to YOU?!

Posted by Janelle on April 4, 2002, at 18:07:56

I thought it might be interesting to get a feel for how people on here are managing financially with what can be a debilitating psychiatric illness, so I've come up with a little survey. If I get enough responses, I'll tally them and eventually post the results in what is a hopefully meaningful and intersting way!

Okay, please indicate which of the following applies to you:

1) Single, able to work, and able support myself (no financial problems even with the illness)

2) Single, UNable to work, on *public* assistance (e.g. Social Security Disability, Disability Insurance through most recent employer, etc.)

3) Single, UNable to work, financially dependent on family (parents, siblings, etc.)

4) Single, UNable to work, financially dependent on Fiance/Significant other

5) Married, Able to work and contribute to household income

6) Married, UNable to work, but spouse's income is enough to support family

7) Married, UNable to work, spouse either has low income or also not working, so using public assistance (see examples above)

8) Same conditions as #7, but dependent on other family members (parents, siblings)

9) Other - PLEASE SPECIFY!

A BIG THANKS to all who participate! :-)

No problemo. Are you going to fill the survey?

But when I'm really suffering from insomnia, it's hard. I work from home, too, so I can work whenever I want. That's not one of the options but should be.

Survey - Why not make it a poll instead » Janelle

Janelle,

I don't know if you are aware of this but there is a poll function at Psycho Babble Open.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psycho-babble-open/

You can set up your own poll there and just let them know about it here. I think that you might get more answers to questions there since people can answer anonymously. You can even answer your own questions. It's great for this kind of straight quiz type question and will even calculate your results for you. Afterwards, when there are some results, we could talk about it here.

The poll lets you set a close date. I'd suggest that you do that and let people know what it is when you announce the poll.

Dr. Bob!Is tis permissible on PB? » Janelle

Janelle;
I am asking Dr. Bob to make a determination as to whether or not your survey is permissible on PB.
No one should be confronted with revealing their race, religion, economic status, maritial status, sexual preference or if they are on public assistance for I believe that those questions are humiliating to afflicted people and are private. I also believe that your survey constitutes "pressure' as defined by Dr.Bob in his rules of civility.

Janelle;
I am asking you to answer the folowing questions:(It has been determined on this board that I can present the questions to you as long as I ask you only once) (also, I am not asking you to reveal your gender, maritial status, economic status, etc. as you are in your survey)Also, you do not have to answer any or all of the questions.
1) Are you a resercher in an accredited University?
2) What possible inferences are you attempting to make with the data that you are soliciting?
3) Don't you think that it is humiliating enough to be labled by society as "mentally ill" ?
4) Don't you think that your survey arrouses humiliating feelings by reminding us that we may be dependant on public assistance because of our afflictions which rob us of our livelyhoods?
5) Don't you think that some of us have had our marriages destroyed by our afflictions and that your survey could arrouse those horrible feelings?
6) those who want to know what this queation is can email me.
7) Do you think that there is some kind of humor that you can publish from our responses? What kind of humor do you find in someone that can't work because they are impaired? What kind of humor do you find in people that are rejected bcause they are impairred?
8) What kind of humor do you find in someone that is crying out for help to get out of their pain?

I think the survey is OK. It's voluntary. No one has to reveal anything -- or to feel humiliated. And she asked just once. Making it a poll was a good idea, though...

Geez, Lou:

Talk about uncivil! You're giving someone the third degree for asking a harmless question that has one multiple choice answer! We're big boys and girls and can certainly decide for ourselves whether we want to answer a harmless question. Most of us are here under pseudonyms; how likely is it that sweet Janelle is going to harm either our personal reputations or our on-line personas with this survey? Who's standing over us at the computer holding a gun to our heads, pressuring us to answer?

If you're going to think about it that way, Lou, then you have to believe anyone who asks a question here is pressuring all the others for answers. Has anyone told you to reconsider posting your Gates stories because they feel religious pressure?

If you don't want to participate, fine. But don't ruin it for her. Do unto others, Lou.

and responses to it, if any, stay here? Thanks,

I know you asked who Stanley Milgram is, and I know I replied with a version of one of his experiments, but I can't find your question or my response! Even my second response was gone. I just added it again.

That's not a nice thing to do to people who are already suffering from some weird disorders! I pride myself on being a good directions follower, and I was babbling socially, not talking about administrative stuff. I was sooooo tired, yet I sat here til my eyes screamed looking for something because I thought I had gone nuts, having just read that you never delete posts because they wreck the history of the thread.
