Support Group, Ground-Zero, Opera

Posted by robinibor on January 17, 2002, at 19:39:13

So...Andrew Solomon spoke at the Mood Disorders Support Group in NYC...and he was soooo good. His book, Noonday Demon, contains some beautiful writing, so it made us feel very happy that he thought so highly of Undoing Depression.
The next day we visited Ground Zero. It has been hard to get my mind around the shock, horror, enormity of it all. And I wonder if there can ever be peace in the world when there are people who live in such extreme poverty that they can be manipulated to carry out violent acts in the name of religion or history or whatever.
I don't suppose this is the place for my ranting, but how will things ever change when so small a percentage of the world's people have almost all the power/stuff?
Then we went to the Met and saw Tosca. We have always wanted to see an opera for real (not just on TV)...and we probably will never get to go again because it's incredibly expensive. And damn if I don't feel guilty every time I get to do something I don't "need" to do. Luckily, we got my paxil increased or I wouldn't be able to enjoy anything.

The opera

Robin - why do you think we're all so into self-denial? Going to the Met is a truly unique experience particularly for those of us who live in the hinterlands. I still haven't gone and hope to some day, but I think you should never fill guilty about providing yourself with this kind of experience - it's not like you're doing it every week.

A couple of years ago my siblings and I decided to give my Dad Met tickets for his birthday. He is a true opera buff and tries to get to NYC once a year for the opera. We decided to go the gift certificate route since we didn't really know what he'd like to see or when he could go. Since I never pay attention to these things, I had no idea how expensive it actually was. "Sticker shock" doesn't do justice to my reaction.

I'm glad you went. Tosca's great...an opinion expressed by someone who's only seen a community opera performance but loved it.

Robin (or anyone else) -- do you have contact info for that group?

I don't know if that's even possible. Particularly if you live or work here. I'm seeing (in the press) and hearing (from friends or the radio) people feeling so guilty because they look at the skyline and can't remember where they used to be. One of my favorite views was down 6th Avenue from the Village ... a friend who did some post-doc work at NYU saw a picture I took of the view as it is now and called it "the Big Empty." Whatever they decide to build in that space, the Big Empty is always going to be there in my mind....
