Couple of questions for Noa

Posted by Phil on November 9, 2001, at 7:24:24

Noa, How expensive are the sleep studies? If I remember correctly, you use a cpap? device. Can you have a sleep latency test while on several drugs????
What made you suspect that you had sleep apnea?

How is your 10,000 lux light box working and does it use a lot of energy?

Thanks in advance and hope you are doing well.

Your bud,

Phil

The sleep study is fairly expensive--my insurance covered most of it. The cpap is expensive too, insurance covered more than half, though.

I don't know about the sleep latency test, though.

I suspected apnea when I started having nightmares about being under water and unable to get to the surface to breathe!

I love my 10,000 lux light box! I don't know how much energy it uses--I can try to get that info. Lucky for me, my electricity is covered in the rent! I am thinkng of getting a smaller desk lamp version for work, just to get a booster shot of light in the afternoon. I try to get outside midday but it is not always practical. My office is windowless---UGH.

Take care.

Thanks, Noa (nm)

Noa - sorry to jump into this late, but where and how do you use the larger box. My pdoc gave me some info on light boxes and since I can't see myself just sitting in front of one doing nothing, I wondered if the smaller ones on a desk might be sufficient. Would this be something you'd just keep on all day like a regular desk lamp?

Hi Noa,

You may or may not remember that I purchased a light box last year. I didn't feel like I was getting a lot of benefit from it and ended up selling it (at a garage sale of all places...).

I was wondering if you would expand a bit on how you use it? Like times of day (or night), where in your home, for reading, stuff like that. Hope you don't mind the questions.

Hope everything is well for you.

Greg

I usually use it in the am, first thing. I have it right next to my computer, and have angled the monitor and the light box so even though I am looking at the monitor screen, the light is shining into my eyes. I have "veg" time first thing in the morning, while I wait for my brain to wake up. Take my adderall and thyroid meds, turn on the light and my computer scrabble game, spend an hour.

I have also at times added a bit more time in the afternoon (particularly on weekends) or early evening (not too long, just enough to wake me up for a few hours).

I think the smaller boxes just require longer exposure/closer range. The research says benefit can be at 2500 lux or above, but when I was looking, it seemed like people recommend 10,000 if you don't want to spend all day in front of the light.

I am thinking of getting a desk lamp version for my windowless office to supplement the bigger box. But you need to ask yourself if you will be having the light shine into your eyes enough--ie, just having it on your desk isn't enough.

I think everyone's needs are different, and trial and error is probably the best way to figure it out. Most of the companies have pretty good return policies so you could try it and return it if it doesn't do much good for you.

What I notice is that while it doesn't do much of anything about mood, it does help me wake up in the morning and not feel like sleeping the winter away.

The desk lamp versions I've seen online can face down as a desk lamp, or angle up to shine light directly in eyes for light therapy.
