Work Sucks (Long Rant) please reply

Posted by afatchic on August 30, 2001, at 21:28:26

Just when I thought I was feeling Ok on Effexor, reality rears it's ugly head. My supervisor is one of those people we love to hate. She so obviously has problems but she enjoys making fun of people who take AD's. She acts like she needs to be my best friend by talking about her personal life for hours on end and insisting I go on 2 to 3 hours lunchs with her. Eventually, she explodes and demands to know why I haven't gotten more accomplished. She becomes very hostile.

My guess is that she's still getting over the loss of her teddy bear and her mom wanted a boy instead of a girl so she was denied ballet classes.
She's a poor baby give the wee damaged soul a hug and a lollypop for lunch.

OMG,
That sounds like my borderline boss. The thought of having to sit through a TWO HOUR LUNCH gives me the heebie-geebies! No, really, that sounds SO familiar. It seems like a cat/mouse game. They set you up with the opportunity to screw something up or screw off (and get nothing done) and then jump your ass for it! One thing I have found out about bosses like that is: Don't discuss your personal life with them and *especially* don't discuss what you do or don't like-they save that info for later use when they are angry with the whole world.

She sounds like an ego maniac with an inferiority complex. These screamers got attention as kids by screaming and haven't changed their style.
I agree with dreamer.
I also, from experience unfortunately, know that these folks can do bad things. One of those bottom dwellers fired me on Christmas Eve in the early 90's. Asshole!!
My advice, next time it throws a tantrum, compose yourself, ask for a few minutes in private, and beat it to a pulp. Scratch that, meet with it and say that you do not allow anyone to talk to you in that tone of voice.
I wouldn't go to lunch with it either.

Just an opinion,

Phil

i agree with phil - decline lunches - tell her you just know you'll get behind, and ask her: hasn't she already gotten on your case since you had got behind before? and going to 2-3 hr lunches isn't going to help...

another spec of advice: look for another job NOW. don't let anybody else in the office know... things can only get worse with a boss like this (i like the 'bottom-dweller' or is it 'bottom-feeder'? image. my ex-boss was that, for sure.)
plan your escape! (now)

all the best,
wendy

Thanks! Great Advice! (nm)
