The news and ...

Posted by Willow on July 23, 2001, at 19:57:40

Are more of us suffering with "psychological" issues, mental illnesses, or is it just a scape goat? Not quite as far north as myself a young widow killed her two young children and failed a suicide attempt. Another failed attempt with carbon monoxide, not really the guy changed his mind and called 911. They took a long time in responding. He died two days later in the hospital. This all happened the same month.

I don't think is is more. I think it is better reporting, better diagnosis, more willingness to acknowledge that we have a mental illness. So the guy who died from the failed carbon monoxide poisoning attempt - 20 years ago, that would have been a tragic accident, swept under the rug. We would only have had the occasional mother story. The rest would have remained anonymous, hidden.

I refuse to read the paper because the things reported are selective and they bother me. I listen to NPR and call it a day.

NPR? (np)

Probably true. I'm probably just feeling a little mixed up so these stories draw my attention.

You're listening to NPR where the monotonal sound of my voice will soothe you into the loving embrace of a permanant coma...

Just my nature to opine of course..... :)

I also love "Wait! Wait! DOn't tell me!" "Michael Feldman's Whaddya KNow" and "Rewind." I love radio humor and radio drama. My dial hardly ever budges from the local NPR station.

Re the "NPR monotone" (was that Kid A?): I was an announcer for a while on a non-NPR public radio station that airs classical and jazz. My friends asked me if there was some course in getting that special public radio "sound." I think that "sound" is the soothing monotone you're referring to. :)
It may however be genetic; I come from a long line of radio-folk.

Shelli: you are absolutely right. Those are among my favorite shows. I just wish I know how to "time delay" them the way you can with TV so that I could listen to them when I am in the car at my convenience!

"Wait!Wait!" is a weekly "news quiz" that has a rather British profile: a panel of three humorists, call in participants, and a single guest answer questions about the week's news. Guests include artist, journalist, musician, actor, etc... (Linda Werthheimer and George McGovern among them.) One of the games is a series of limericks (based on the news) that the caller must complete. Karl Kassel asks the questions (yes, even the limericks, often in character). The prize is Karl's voice on your answering machine. (!)

"Rewind" is similar--a humorous review of the week's news. And Whaddyaknow is a really random, very funny quiz show.

I think they're all on the NPR website (npr.org).

The BBC doesn't have a monopoly on smart humor!
