I don't think is is more. I think it is better reporting, better diagnosis, more willingness to acknowledge that we have a mental illness. So the guy who died from the failed carbon monoxide poisoning attempt - 20 years ago, that would have been a tragic accident, swept under the rug. We would only have had the occasional mother story. The rest would have remained anonymous, hidden.
