----flutterby: I was in psychoanalysis with a psychologist for more than three years...... for me it was like having a recipe but not having any of the ingredients. He would help me to "see" things I was doing and/or thinking that were dysfunctional-- but no steps to get beyond that.(and I certainly couldn't figure it out myself-- it felt to me that he expected me to have more insight than I had) I often left there feeling frustrated, confused and stuck. To move forward -- I've found CBT(cognitive behavioral therapy) work helps, I'm not "stuck" AS much...... but.... that is me and everyone is different.

I read in some forums that some people would only ever have psychoanalysis for therapy as that is what helps them most....*shrugs*..... it must be an individual thing.

If you don't feel you're making progress or it's too slow-- maybe you should look into different types of therapy.... there's so many varieties out there! no reason to spin ones wheels for too long....

good luck to you

deerock,

I am having success with psychoanalysis. My psychoanalyst is my p-doc. He has a lot of experience with my type of dx. But I am more hung up over my dx than he is.

I thought the just talk of psychoanalysis would not work for me, I like things spelled out (outline of sorts if you will) but it has.

I am so much better today than a year ago. Not perfect, not well but moving forward.

My p-doc and I talked about this today. My progress. My trusting him more.

It is hard though. I started with 3 x per week then 2 per week and now 1x per week. I can go up anytime. I am the one that decreased the times.

does this help?

I guess I had it. Not classic (which would have bugged me with the rigmarole and the hydraulic imagery) but of the Winnicott sort.

It's the therapist that matters, of course, not the theory, and I was lucky with mine.

I went 5 days a week, pretty much.

There were no diagnoses to speak of back then, which can be a good thing if you want to avoid reification.

Basically I'd not had enough or good enough parenting.

It certainly helped me with my kids.
