Hard to eat...

Posted by no_rose_garden on July 29, 2008, at 22:13:16

I've always been able to eat...actually probably ate to much. I LOVE food!

But lately, I haven't been eating much...yesterday I just ate a nectarine and some crackers. It's been like this for about a week. I still feel hungry and love the smell of food, but it doesn't seem worth it to eat - i just don't feel like it.

I don't really know what to do, since my problem is usually eating too much and not knowing what to stop.

I like not wanting to eat b/c it makes me feel skinnier, but on the other hand, i know it's not right and I miss loving food.

That's exactly how I get when I'm depressed. It doesn't mean you are, but it could be. How are you feeling emotionally?

Just keep monitoring yourself. I wasn't paying attention and I lost fifteen pounds without noticing and now I'm underweight, something else to worry about.

...i've been feeling worse than i have for a couple years....I just went off my meds.

So do i just not eat? I wish I could...I think i used to also get comfort from food.

I'm the same way, when my depression worsens.

But - another possibility - maybe your meds were making you eat? And now you're regulating back to your non-medicated appetite?

I agree with the above posters - it is something to watch but not necessarily to worry about. I have found it helpful to set a weight, and if I fall below it, to talk with my T and my GP. Otherwise, I don't worry.

While reading your post I was pondering what this could be ...... a symptom of depression or something else..... then I read what "backseatdriver" wrote:

I'd never thought of that! Something like going OFF meds could actually get ones eating habits back to a healthier state..... hmmmm that's interesting and I can see how that could be the case for some people.(not meaning it's your case just had never thought of that)

Well anyway, "no rose garden"-- I hope you find a comfortable balance. Maybe if you aren't eating much on some days, you could take a vitamin to give your body the nutrients it might miss out on.... just an idea...... I'm one that can go a whole day with just one bean burrito from Taco Bell..... so under eating hasn't ever concerned me... but I imagine if one isn't used to it, it can seem a bit worriesome.

best to you-

If it continues to be an issue, it's probably a good idea to start monitoring your weight.

I just broke down and bought a scale today to do the same thing, since my weight has not come back even though I haven't been depressed for 2 and a half months. I never wanted to have one in the house after getting over anorectic behavior 7 years ago. But sometimes you have to :(

Even though i know it's bad, I like losing weight on one level. I don't know how strong it is or could get, but I do have some body image issues....I feel skinner already, and it's nice.

I've been taking multivitamins already b/c I have a slight iron deficiency

its not just about vitamins, its electrolytes, your whole body will get out of whack...and you may end up passing out at an inopportune time.

try to drink some nutrition if you can't EAT your food. try boost, even slimfast shakes have vitamins in them and drink sports drinks, gatorade and such. do this on top of what you are able to eat each day.

do this while monitoring your eating. if your still only taking in a couple hundred calories a day you may want to mention this to your doc.
it can get serious quicker than you think and soon become a problem (or habit).

please take care.
