I think therapists are nuts, most of all of them

Posted by SatinDoll on October 27, 2006, at 20:11:40

Why does it seem when you really get to know them, you realize that they are more f*cked up than you?

I think it must take a special breed of people! LOL Okay, maybe I have been drinking too much tonight, but geeze I think the T's that I know need therapy more than me. LOL Good night, sleep tight, don't let your therapist bite!

I think it's sometimes true. The *best* ones, IMO, are the ones who've had to fight for their mental health the same way we do (personally, I'd have nothing in common with a T who had no problems). But you definitely want one who won the battle! LOL

You know maybe I have had 3 drinks too many, but I feel like calling up my T and tell him to "bite Me!" LOL

He isn't all that special, what am I ? A love sick hound dog? He must love the attention I give him, he just eats it up like ice cream. But he won't share his ice cream cone.

Maybe i should do to bed!

I have worked for many therapists (at an agency) and now for a private practice group. I would have to say I TOTALLY agree with you. At a minimum they have at least as many of their own "issues" as do the clients, and some have more. I do not think that necessarily impedes their ability to counsel others. The analogy I use is that a medical doctor can be overweight with heart disease but still work to cure his/her patients. "Physician Heal Thyself" and "the Cobblers Children have no Shoes" and all of that.

Thanks Kim,

You are right! ;-) They can still help us even if they are nuts.

Kinda reminds me of my regular doctor telling me I need to lose some weight and I look at him who is like at least 100 lb overweight, so what the heck? LOL

But I kinda like how therapists are nuts and they kinda like themselves that way even though many try not to let the clients see the real person. But in a way it is comforting, but in a way totally funny. So they are like a confident nut. I just love it.

above post for trying to be wise (nm)

I'm not sure what my therapist does with his short term clients. But with me, he pretty much shows his warts.

I wouldn't say he's nuts, but he's human and he has just as many issues as I do. Living wise, he might have a few more in that his life is far less stable than mine is, and he's faced more career and personal challenges that weren't unrelated to who he is.

But...

He faces different challenges than I do, and his flaws are a flip side of his strengths. His strengths complement me quite well in the areas that I need strength from a therapist.

Just like my husband's flaws are a flip side of his strengths, and his strengths complement my needs in a husband.

Just like my flaws area flip side of my strengths, although I have a harder time seeing how my strengths are useful to anyone.

My therapist told me long ago (and repeats now and then) that I have a genius for finding what I need in life. For creating situations to compensate for my weaknesses. Except for my job, which I really think is too stressful to be healthy for me, I think he's probably right.

So maybe your therapist (and everyone else's therapist) is a bit nuts. But as long as they're nuts in a different way than you are, or in a way that's useful to you, maybe that's not such a bad thing. I'd hate having a perfect little therapist who had never struggled with his/her own issues? It would annoy me no end and not be helpful at all.

Incidentally, there are two people I admired as being two of the most centered, well adjusted, people I'd ever seen. I admired them no end. As I got to know one of them better, and found out something about the other one by accident, I realized they were as nuts as I am.

So maybe therapists are nuts because everyone is nuts, if you get to know them.

Well I mean nuts in a enduring way, so I hope I am not offending anyone. I want to buy a mug for my T I saw the other day and it said, I like you, but you are nuts! LOL But then I thought it wouldn't be a good idea for that mug to be on his desk when he sees client, they might take it wrong. ;-) I love my T , he is so cool, but he is nuts just like me.
