Getting back in to therapy

Posted by cubic_me on June 22, 2006, at 17:35:47

Hello to anyone who remembers me. I used to come on here fairly regularly when I was in therapy 2-3 years ago, then when I went in to group therapy instead my posting kind of tailed off. Sorry if this post rambles a little.

Since leaving group (it wasn't for me) I've thought about going back to individual therapy, so I went back to my old T for a session last October, who said she thought I needed longer term therapy than she could offer (it's at college and normally they only offer 6 sessions, but have a few longer term people - I went for 2 years), she was also retiring this May, so no chance of seeing her again now :(

On my very tight student budget I can't afford private therapy so old T suggested a place that is for people on low incomes who give a small donation - I'm in the UK by the way. I went for an assessment with them late last year but I'm still on the waiting list to start therapy. It's been 7 months now and I'm fed up with waiting. I've had 2 episodes of deep depression and had to go back on antidepressants despite me thinking therapy is a better option for me than medication, I just needed some hope at the time.

How do you sit it out for that long?

Hi there. Of course I remember you. But I can't believe it's been two years. Time flies.

Have you tried calling around and seeing if anyone does sliding scale or pro bono work? I don't know how common it is over there, but it's not uncommon here.

Hi cubic me,

I remember you. Group therapy wouldn't be for me, either. I don't blame you for wanting to see a therapist one on one.

I don't know how the UK therapy system works, but like Dinah suggested maybe there are therapists who will work on a sliding scale like they do in the US?

Sorry I can't be of more help, I know what a wreck I'd be after seven months of waiting, and I just wanted to let you know that if we can help you get throught this, we're here.

Poet

oh i've missed you sweetie!!!!!!!

i know you really struggled with the 'group' concept (as did i) it just doesn't work for some people. sorry it didn't help with you.

since she's retiring is there someone that is taking her place that would see you? if they saw you for a few years before maybe the new T will???
sorry i don't have much advice or help here..
but i was sooo glad to see your post i had to make sure and say hi.

Wow, I'm remembered :D I've been reading a lot in the past few months, just not brave enough to post.

There are some Ts who do sliding scale work, though therapy here isn't as big as it is in the US. The trouble is that I really have no money, the next few months are going to be very tight financially. I doubt I'll start therapy until at least October as I'm away from town on placement in July and August - it's probably a good thing I haven't become to dependent on anyone.

Aww B2c, so good to speak to you again! I've been trying to catch up with what's been going on with everyone I used to talk to, it seems things have moved on for you while I've been away.

Yes, there will be someone to replace my T, and old T said that someone from the center would be happy to see me as a one off to 'tide me over' but they couldn't offer anything more - I must've drained all the life out of them!

I'm kind of looking forward to something/someone different though, some new light on things might help me to get on with my life. I thought my old T was FAB, and great at keeping me alive but not really moving me on!

I'm going to my GP's once a month for scripts and she's lovely (1000x better than my old pdocs, and she's promised not to refer me to that team again, phew!)

This is the end of the thread.
