A womans opinion ...

Posted by rabble_rouser on July 28, 2005, at 6:12:47

Just a thought. Have been reading about types of communication between the sexes, both healthy and dysfunctional.

Can anyone help me with this question: What is the difference between common-or-garden daily flirting, and relating to members of the opposite sex in a 'sexualized manner'?

Maybe the line is drawn at 'where you begin to feel uncomfortable'?

Cheers

I guess this belongs on the relationships board, but what got me thinking was some of the posts about relationships with therapists.

As a male, the whole idea of sexuality in therapy never really entered my head, especially as my T was male! Is it quite common for ladies to have feelings for their therapists? How does that affect the therapeutic relationship?

Hi Rabble,

I think that on the issue of sexual feelings for our Ts, we women at Babble are really all over the map. So I'm sure you'll get a lot of different responses.

As for me, there are definitely sexual feelings there at times. Not overwhelming and certainly nothing I would ever want to act on. It's funny because I've had my fair share of sex (okay probably more than my fair share) with more men than I would ever want to count and I've never had anything approaching the closeness I've had with my therapist. So for me, sex would be a big step backwards on the intimacy scale.

Of course, most of us never really know how our Ts feel in that regard and I guess that's okay. Once in a while, there is a bit of mild flirtation on my T's part, just enough to let me know that he doesn't find me completely repulsive.

To me, garden variety flirting is what most of us do all the time. It's smiling, laughing, etc, and usually giving the other person your undivided attention.

It's the type thing you can do with a person you don't know really well. It does have *some* sexual undertones, but you don't really expect it to go any where and you aren't emotionally invested.

Relating in a 'sexualized manner' I would think is a couple of steps beyond that, in that the person is wanting to (or at least acting like they are wanting to) take it further.

My opinion.
