I missed so much the past two days (might trigger)

Posted by Jazzed on May 29, 2005, at 10:36:36

I went back and read all the threads from the past two days, and it seemed like I missed a lot. I got such a kick out of the "most embarrassing things" thread. I hope sometime I have some funny things to relate.

Anyway, I wasn't online because I had a bad reaction to the meds I was on. Made me have suicidal thoughts that would just pop into my head. This is the 2nd med to do this to me. Weird.

Anyway, instead of asking for help from my p-doc, I decided just not to go back, and to quit taking the med., which was safe to do, it wasn't one I needed to go off of slowly. I had reservations about not talking to the doctor, but I was ashamed and embarrassed that this was becoming such an ordeal to find the right medication, and I felt that I was becoming a thorn in his side. I have SO much trouble asking for help from anyone.

Anyway, the day I called to cancel my next appt. I felt really bad, and felt weak for needing help, was afraid the doctor would be mad at me, etc..... After a few bad days, and several bad nights, my husband told me I had to call, had to make an appt., had to get help. He was really worried and supportive, thank God!

Anyway, I was able to get in to see the doc the same day I called, which shocked me because he's really hard to get in to see, but I was really grateful. He didn't seem mad, and switched my meds, so I feel better. Just getting in the same day, seeing him, seeing that he wasn't at his wits end with me, and getting him to Rx something else made me feel better. The new meds seem to be good so far, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I have another appt. in two weeks, and I think it's time to get myself a T to work out some of my obvious issues!

He is a keeper!!!!

I'm glad you called and are feeling better now. It takes courage to make that call and walk into that office. Be proud of yourself!

Medication trials are horrid. I hope this combination is better for you. I'm glad you called.

I feel so badly for you, jz'd.

There are so many people who have to go from med to med for a while until they find one that works for them. If your pdoc couldn't handle that, he'd have gone for a different sort of medical degree! It's such a common thing.

I;m sorry you're having to go through this mess. It must be awful. I sure don't need meds to make me weird - I seem to do that well without chemicals. But it did happen once a couple of years ago that I had a bad reaction to a migraine med. I pretty much fell apart for a while. As soon as I went off it, I was ok. Lots more migraines, but they too have tapered off now.

If it helps, I think we have every right to feel better, and we have every right to get help to do so. I'll bet most docs agree with that.

Take care. I am hoping very much that this new med works for you.

I'm so glad you're all right and you're feeling better. Reactions to meds can be frightening, and asking for help even moreso. I'm glad you survived both and got some good results (*keeping fingers crossed*).

Thank you! Boy, you are so right, why does it take so much courage to make the call and go in? I was so scared to even call, and more scared to face him again, after all the problems I've had with meds. Then, to top it off, when I called they said they sched. me for a particular time, and when I got there, they said I wasn't on the sched. I could've died, so mortifying!

Thanks Dinah, glad I called too. Does everyone go through so much trial and error? I feel like such an idiot!

Thanks ShortE,

You made me feel better. I guess when it's "you", you feel like you're the only one. I usually have trouble asking for, or admitting I need help, even when I'm paying for it. I hope I don't need too much more switching.

Oh dear! You shouldn’t feel like an idiot! It’s not your fault the doctor prescribed meds that didn’t work for you!

Sorry to hear you were going through a rough time. It’s great that you called and got such prompt attention. I hope your new meds work out, but if you have problems, I’m sure they can be sorted out if you call straightaway – and you can spare yourself several days of side effects.

Oh Happy, happy, happy! You are so sweet. Last night I was SO depressed, but today I feel good. When I get depressed I take 5 HTP, and sometimes a LOT of it. It really helps and doesn't have any side effects or withdrawl worries. I don't think it would be of great benefit to someone with clinical depression, but I do sink low in my moods mostly every evening after a full day with my two boys, who are constantly at it.

Are you on any meds? I can't remember.

Thanks Tamar! I think part of what's going on with me is just situational, and some of it hormonal. I have terrible PMS, and every time I've had my meds changed I've been at that point, and then top it off with not enough sleep, bingo, problems.

I don't even know what HTP is, lol. But it sounds like a good thing! I am glad you are feeling better today! I am only taking Sarafem for 2 weeks before my period for PMS, but I am thinking I don't need it anymore, since I am recovered mostly from my Post Tramatic Stress. My regular doctor said that PTSD effects PMS big time, so maybe I will talk to him about it in a couple of months.

Hi Happy,

5 HTP makes serotonin in your brain, so that you feel better. It has worked wonders for me! The SSRIs, like Sarafem, which is low dose Prozac, cause the receptors to soak in the serotonin longer, so you feel better, but they don't actually make more. You can't take 5 HTP with an SSRI because you can get serotonin syndrome, which can be deadly!!!!! So, if you want to try it, make sure you've been off the Sarafem for a month, so it's out of your system!

5 HTP is a good thing for people like me, who might not have enough serotonin, or who, for some reason get depleted. I like that I can pick it up w/o an Rx, and that, so far, there are no side effects for me. I used to only take 50 mg a day, and that worked well, but I have taken as much as 700 mg, and now take about 300 a day on avg. just to feel normal. Some days, like when I was getting really depressed, I take 100 mg, then an hour later take 100 more, up to 700 mg, then I usually feel much better. My GP said it's a pretty good thing, and endorsed it for me. I don't think p-docs would, but who knows, I think they mention it in some of the newer ADHD books.

I think much of my trouble these days is hormonal. I've been 42 days w/o a period, which is not normal for me. I also have PMS, and my ADD symptoms are aggravated at that time. I find that I end up taking more at those times.

Oh, very important, the only brand I've ever found that worked for me, is the Natrol brand, which is $10 for 30 of them. I usually get them on sale buy 1/1 free.
