Contemplating depression.....

Posted by 64bowtie on October 30, 2004, at 18:50:28

When I had toooo many unresolved issues and unresolvable interpersonal conflicts, I must have had depressed moments. I was such a busi-aholic that I probably didn't give myself time to slate my depressedness. I remember this condition of conflictedness so vividly that I am certain that if I had been professionally diagnosed and medicated, I would have someday blamed it all on my conflictedness.

My conflictedness... My cavalcade of avalanching emotions... My chronic indecision and uncertainty... My blaming and grumbling... My anger... My rage (and raging)... My invocation that someone is not doing their assigned task or my life wouldn't be such a mess... I guess I believed in magic!!!

If I had not been asked the question, "What's it mean to be a grown up?", I would likely still be floundering....

I'm sorry that the hurt came out in the form of anger. I'm also sorry that I posted such a graphic post and apologize to all posters who read it.

Thank you for your kindness.

clincial depression is not a moment » 64bowtie

Rod, if you are contemplating dealing with clincially depressed people in your practice as a life coach, it may help you to undestand the difference between moments of self-doubt and clinical depression. There are lots of web sites and books about clinical depression that you may want to peruse. It's not just a moment, I believe it has to last for 2 wks or more and it also affects the person physically. For example, you can't eat or you eat too much, sleeping patterens are affected, crying for no reason, thoughts of suicide or death in general, etc. I won't repeat it all, you can find it if you do some research. Look under "clinical depression" not just depression.

I have been clinically depressed and it is not a "moment" as you describe.

Emmy, I am sorry for your loss. Depression has claimed too many lives. In this time, take care of yourself and maybe you will have to avoid reading certain posts? I know someone who committed suicide too; he wasn't a close friend, but close enough for it to be devastating. He was a man with a tough guy kind of job, and I think that the pressure to be "grown up" and tough just made the depression worse, because he hid it from most people and avoided certain treatment options that would have "outed" the depression at his job. The irony is that at the funeral, everyone finally knew, because the way he did it was obviously intentional.

It's still sad sometimes not to see him in his usual spot in our group.

Thank you for your kindness. There is no good way to lose someone you love. But suicide is an especially painful way.
