does anyone get depressed

Posted by terrics on March 21, 2004, at 10:53:58

Sometimes when I read over this board [which I find supportive] I get very depressed. If I feel lonely the board is a comfort, but just the thought of each of us working so hard, having difficulties with therapists and pdocs, med adjustments, and having been this way for so long is frightening. Just the fact that so many of us have similar problems with professionals, meds, etc. makes me sad.

If you need your gall bladder out, you go to the hospital get it removed and a short while later you are cured.

There are so many sudden flair ups of 'this illness' [mental]. Ts. get annoyed when one does not make progress in therapy. Mine often contradicts herself to the point that I now mind my Ps&Qs. Pdocs want to change meds when one is the best they ever have been.

Oh well I think I am afraid as tomorrow I start DBT and my husband thinks I am a hypochondriac because of it.

Sorry if this is a little incoherant. terrics

Good luck with your DBT!!!

I did 6 months of skill training. I think that the hardest part was for each of us to show up at each class with a positive attitude. They try to separate the class from therapy so that you can focus on the skills. The more you can do to get yourself centered before each class the more you will learn.

I'm sure you'll do fine! Please tell us all about it, maybe some people here would like to be virtual members of your class!

It could be depressing to read the boards.....except that I from a generation that remembers when mental illness wasn't discussed publicly. I did not know, in my 20s, what everyone takes for granted now.....ADs, therapy, group.......The only thing that I knew of was shock therapy and it was a very hush-hush subject. You had to be REALLY crazy if you had that therapy.......But now celebrities readily admit that they suffer from depression, etc. Maybe my perspective is different from yours because I'm older. I find it really refreshing that people seek help. (I was married to someone years ago who eagerly and often told me that my depression "was in my head".) Now my friends and I compare ADs and discuss our "illness" like we would discuss having a head cold!!! Hang in there and good luck tomorrow! Pat

Terrics - I've seen some really great results from DBT. If you don't own the workbook, see if one of the instructors will photocopy chapter 1 for you. It's only about 6 pages, and very useful.

Hopefully they'll start the sessions with a mindfullness moment...a bit of meditation. Does wonders for students and instructors!

Good luck!

Pat - Ditto the generation issue. Too many people suffered and even died back then simply due to fear of the stigma of mental illness. Not that stigma does not still exist today, but it's decreased so much. The fact that this board exists, and that I am writing this to you right now - well, geewillakers, it's a miracle! (that word will get past Dr. B won't it?)

Well, I have only been on this board for a few days, so my answer probably doesn't really count, but it is just a relief to me to be able to discuss things that I would not be able to discuss with ANYONE else (e.g., transference). I think the same thing that makes it a little depressing is also what makes it "safe."

I doubt the age thing has anything to do with it. I am UP THERE and remember all the stigmas. thanks for your ans. terrics

Good luck with the DBT! I've always wanted to do it, so I'll be really interested in how it goes. Maybe it will even inspire me to get out the workbook and give it another try.

And about the board, we're sort of self selected. Those who go to six CBT therapy sessions and walk out feeling much better probably don't end up here. So we're not necessarily representative of the entire therapy population.

Funny you should mention that -- this is exactly what was initially recommended for me for my mandatory counseling (6 CBT sessions). I guess the psychologist didn't realize what he was getting himself into :)

Me too! Well, I don't think six sessions was mentioned, but it was intended to be short term CBT.

And the CBT did work quite a bit on my presenting problems!

At the end of my first session she said that she would probably need to see me 6 or 8 times. That was over 9 years ago.

When I read some of your postings I said to myself....ooooohhh I wanna send her to CBT! I did 6 months of it and it really helped me a lot with some very similar issues. Once upon a time many years ago, I used to think that at the end of my session, my T would leap from his chair and rush to the bathroom to vomit. That was the affect I believed I had on him. Sound familiar???

BUT...I also started taking AD's during that 6 months. So, the 2 together (just like the literature says) was just the trick for me.

First good luck with DBT my friend said it made a world of difference in her life and it did she was able to work and so much more later on. On your question my reply is NO...I do not get depressed reading and knowing we all have struggles cause I think everyone does even people off the boards..Be it MS, marrital issues and so on everyone has issues and med problems even people finding the right diabetic or high blood pressure problems issues

I get depressed a lot, probably because i'm bipolar. Unfortunately they haven't inventented a pill that works fast to bring me up yet. (tho thank god there's lots of pills to bring me down when i'm too up)

however, it's not my therapy that depresses me, although it progresses SLOWOWOWLY... i think i get a little better with each session, and it is so nice to have someone to talk to. (thanks for paying for it mom)
