Stephen Harper is the best Prime Minister Canada has ever had. Unfortunately the east and the west are divided on many political issues, but what good will it do to have a separatist party as part of the coalition? I can only see that as breeding more separatism. It won't take much to convince us to separate anyway. But even Alberta has three segments. South, central, and northern Alberta are like three different countries. I think Harper can do more to hold Canada together than the three-in-one coalition.

Here's my personal list of the all-time great, near-great, and high-average Prime Ministers of Canada:

Great:
1.William Lyon Mackenzie King
2. Sir John A. Macdonald
3. Sir Wilfrid Laurier

Near-Great:
4. Louis Saint-Laurent

High-Average:
5. Pierre Elliott Trudeau
6. Lester Pearson
7. Sir Robert Borden

I do tend to look into the past for greatness.

Into the past? I can see that you would.

Good list for what little I know about Canadian government.

Way to go!

Having been on this board for quite awhile I've learned about the politics of other countries. (especially AUSTRALIA)..:-)
So I searched for Stephen Harper and this video turned up. Evidently some people aren't too keen on him. This guy reminds me of Jon Stewart on Comedy Central.

He spent a long time on a Canadian "fake news" show called "This Hour Has 22 Minutes," which I haven't seen since I moved from a border area 5 years ago.

Mercer used to do a segment called "Talking to Americans" where he'd spin outrageous tales about Canada and have US citizens going along with them all. They put together a whole special devoted to this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFQlIUWOm1A

He ruined our energy economy in the 80's by causing oil to shut down or move out with his national energy program. PET was a pretty boy with a nice smile. He could deliver a good speech, but you couldn't tell what he was actually saying. He sounded like he had reconstructed our constitution so that we were our own country, but all he did was loosen Quebec. He pushed for equality between the provinces, you've heard it before, rob from the rich and give to the poor. Didn't work. Oil rigs moved out or shut down, and stopped drilling. http://www.cbc.ca/greatest/top_ten/nominee/trudeau-pierre.html

Our Prime Minister in Canada doesn't hold much power against a majority coalition. The Governor General is the representative of the Queen of England (of Canada). http://www.gg.ca/gg/rr/index_e.asp The Governor General insures Canada always has a Prime Minister, but if the government ever fell, what would happen? I don't know. When Joe Clark received a vote of non confidence, the Governor General appointed PETrudeau Prime Minister. The governor general (representing the Queen) is Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces. So, actually the Queen is in charge of our military, and I bet not many Canadians know that.

Have you ever tried to travel from one tip of Alberta or BC or Saskatchewan to the other? (I'm not even sure there are roads) There is still plenty of blue sky and fresh air around here (albeit cold air). It takes 6 hours to go from the Can/US border to Edmonton, and that's not even half way. Oil has got too big too fast up north, and the environment is suffering, but we can still fix it. There are more jobs than people to fill them.

PET was cool, similar to Obama. Trudeaumania followed him around, drawing crowds. He scared me with his policies and his "just watch me" attitude. He was a true Progressive and didn't mind to shout it out. Woodrow Wilson style progressive.

You've out done yourself in making me laugh and cry. It is funny and it is very sad. I think that the offenders know more about America than those people did!

"Oh, Canada" was especially impressive but Mt. Rushmore and preserving the igloo were right there.

MY FACE HURTS!

I remember that episode. Whatever happened to Rick Mercer? Any Americans I have known have loved Canada. I love America too. Hey, that's us. Welcome to North America Canada.

I tend to agree with your list & your looking to the past for greatness!! And I think, looking to the past for politicians who actually care about the Country itself instead of their own careers. Sad.

Trudeau's son Justin may also be looking to take the helms of the Liberal party of Canada. I've met Justin at a few conferences, seminars, and thesis presentations. He is such a wonderful, full of life, positive man. He is pro-peace, pro-Canadian, and makes you proud to live in such a peaceful, progressive country.
