Zoloft and Remeron

Posted by bissie66 on January 19, 2008, at 12:55:53

My doctor took me off Remeron recently because I was starting to feel depressed again, and had me start Zoloft again, which was the first AD I ever took and was very effective once (he also chose it hoping to treat my really bad PMS).

At first I felt great (hypmanic?) but then the last few days I had really bad anxiety and it reminded me somewhat of the mixed episode I had the last time I tried Zoloft alone, before being diagnosed bipolar.

Now I take lithium and lamictal so I didn't think I'd have this reaction. It's not AS bad as pre-mood stabilizers, but pretty bad.

Last night I went back to my Remeron and took that before bed and feel SO much better - no anxiety today!

Could it be that simple? Yesterday I was taking Seroquel and it helped calm me but I still felt like crap emotionally (depressed, fragile). Do you think I should try taking the Remeron and Zoloft together (I see my pdoc next week)?

I was up to 100mg on the Zoloft (150 during PMS) and had only been on it a month. Today out of fear I only took 50 mg. Should I go back to 100 mg? Any opinions on any of this would be great. Thanks so much.

I'd suggest calling you doc and telling him what's going on and ask him what to do. How long have you been on a mood stabalizer and what happened that your diagnosis was changed to bipolar? Phillipa

Though scientific evidence I believe is lacking, in my experience it takes a full 3 to 6 months for body/brain adjustments to settle back to baseline after discontinuing a drug. If you recently stopped remeron, it will be months before you can truly say it is behind you. Just my opinion and experience.

Glad the remeron helps. Hey, maybe zoloft plus low dose remeron?

I've been on mood stabilizers for for probably 7 years. First Neurontin (which later turned on me and made me feel CRAZY) -- that dr prescribed it for 'labile mood' not bp. The next dr diagnosed me bp, which was confirmed by next pdoc. What changed? Well, I changed docs for one thing. My history of symptoms convinced him I guess, and my response to 2 SSRI's without mood stabilizers to which I had horrible reactions of mixed episodes (couldn't sleep, horribly anxious, terrible thoughts, etc.) My pregnancies seemed to bring on my bp symptoms to the extreme. Ever heard of that?

No but it is a stressful event so may have been a trigger? My niece becomes diabetic during pregnancy so anything is possible. Phillipa

Zoloft Remeron is still the best combo I have been on so far. Did poop-out after year or so, but I have never felt so good. 50mg Zoloft and 15mg Remeron. At the end I up'd Remeron to 45mg and Zoloft 150mg.

Thanks for the post. Do you remember if it took a while to kick in? Did you stop taking the combo altogether or are you still taking it with lesser effect? Thank you, Bissie

I was already on Remeron when I started Zoloft, it took about two weeks to kick in. I have always kept Remeron and I'm currently taking 30mg.

Bissie-
Did this ever work out for you? I am on Remeron 15 mg and about to start Zoloft.
