getting a bit healthier, trying slowly but surely

Posted by obsidian on March 15, 2009, at 22:56:36

I'm only up to a mile, but for me consistency is the key. I was running just about every day, but I've gone back to every other day because of a brief illness, some back pain and knee pain. I'm also focusing on building my abdominal muscles, my brother said that that's important for running (he's done some marathons).

I'm hoping to work up to 3 miles at a time within a couple of months. I hope I can run a 5K, that might be nice. The days are getting longer and warmer and it's easier to be outside.

You know what sucks though is that it doesn't seem that I've lost any weight, I have however gained some muscle and definition. So, on to the next thing...changing my diet.

I've got no problem drinking a lot of water, I like to drink a lot of it. I do need to stop drinking soda, but I'm addicted to it, the caffeine, the sugar. Portion size is another thing, but if I prepare meals ahead of time I can handle that, add lots of fruit and vegetables, but there are the ever present sweet things, brownies and cookies and cake oh my.
1) stop soda
2) make meals
3) stop using cake as a coping mechanism ;-)
4) and I absolutely MUST avoid fast food as much as possible

ok, so 4 things..that's a manageable list right?
SLOW changes

I'm running every other day, just a mile so far. I think I'm just going to work on going just a little faster and going just a little bit longer.
My mind is thinking so what is that south beach diet stuff about anyway??
I am by no means into extreme dieting, but I would like to be more mindful about what I am eating.
we shall see...

progress...

I'm doing the south beach thing
I've cut my usual carbohydrate intake a lot
but I slipped a lot too
so I'm going to keep going, leaving out the carbs until I get to bring them back in again, different in quality and quantity though

I didn't run a lot this week
I ran today though
try try again

(((Obsidian)))

Hmm. what can you substitute for a piece of bread? The only thing I can find right now in the word 'Obsidian' is 'ban' - as in ban bread!

How about a pile of brussel sprouts and broccoli? Doesn't that sound better?

When I used to crave carbs and had simulataneous willpower, grilled chicken salads used to help - but no croutons!!

Try this salad..it's satisfying:

pecans
strawberries sliced
mixed greens
gorgonzola
raspberry vinagrette dressing

(low carbs!)

so, it was a special occasion today, my dear boyfriend's birthday, so off to the italian restaurant we went
and I had bread and I had pasta

then I came home and ran two miles, lol
and made a salad for tomorrow
that was my first bread in about 2 weeks
so I forgive myself :-)

Hey-don't deprive yourself...once every 2 weeks? C'mon now. Twice a week seems reasonable.

Well, French bread might be the worst (because baquette is the yummiest), but maybe Ciabatta bread isn't as 'carby'? Ciabatta is awesome.

You could always get those whole wheat tortillas and make pseudo-pizzas out of them. That can't be too bad.

Barilla pasta - forget what's it's called - the one in the yellow box - is made out of chick peas and flax and weird stuff, but for healthier pasta, it's pretty damn good.

thanks garnet,

it's just that I am trying to do this south beach thing (extremely low carbs to start).
It's supposed to help the way you metabolize carbs, get you eating the "right" ones
I really want to move on to the reintroduction of carbs, the fruit, the grains, etc
I'm trying to turn around some really bad eating habits, I have been an absolute carb addict. I am now thinking about what I eat. It's kind of interesting in a way, but it also means that there are a lot of things that I really shouldn't eat or should eat very rarely, and previously these were things I didn't even think about before.
I want to get back to a weight I was at when I was exercising regularly..about 5 years ago or so, but now also with healthier eating habits.
Thanks for the recommendations :-)
