NAC?!?!

Posted by Christ_empowered on February 28, 2015, at 15:18:32

I'm on something of a supplement binge. I'm bout maxed out on meds (trileptal, abilify, wellbutrin sr, and lamictal...plus, rarely, neurontin+low dose risperidone, to keep from freaking out). Most of my problems are well-managed.

So, I'm getting some "NAC Sustain." Looked like a winner. Its 600mgs/NAC per sustained release capsule. I'm thinking 2 caps x 1 daily.

Anyway...anybody have NAC experiences, good or bad? I just added in alpha lipoic acid, and I've read that's a good combo. I've been aiming for 1200/ala per day, but I usually only get 600mgs in.

I'm kind of overloaded w/ supplements at the moment, lol...oh, yeah: I'm adding 5htp. 200mgs sustained release tablets. I'm thinking 1 AM, 1 PM, to try to tame the OCD monster.

Please fill me in on any experiences, tips, suggestions, etc. Also...is antioxidant overload actually a possibility? Cuz...if it is...I may be getting there, lol.

Thanks. :-)

Christ_empowered,

I don't know how much my experience with N-acetylcysteine really "matters" because I don't recall spending much time at all on the supplement, but I noticed an increase in agitation and irritability on the supplement.

Hopefully, your experience with NAC is going better than mine did, assuming that you've started the supplement by now. Do you have any initial impressions of NAC's effects that you'd like to share with us (assuming, of course, that you've begun your trial)?

hey tomaetheus,

I haven't received the package yet, lol. Maybe Wednesday.

Sorry NAC didn't work well for you. I'm cutting out the cigarettes (thank you, Wellbutrin SR), so I figured the NAC could help clear out my lungs. That and the NAC+alpha lipoic acid combo is supposed to be good for raising overall antioxidant levels and boosting the immune system. I'm hoping that, with everything else also on board, I'll make some more progress towards symptom control.

As always, thanks for your reply.

Hi christ empowered.

I remember posts of you that sounded very different. I am glad to hear that you are OK at least!

NAC didnt work out for me.

Initially very positive effects (first 3 days) then awful including suicidality.

I guess im unique with NAC??

I wouldn't say you are unique. I was prescribed NAC by a psychiatrist. It was quite expensive and I was reluctant but I was also desperate. I stayed on it for a couple months but had no improvement.

NAC is often prescribed as part of Ocd therapy.

NAC Seems to work for me. I take 600mg at bedtime. I find on nights I don't take it I don't sleep as well. The effects are subtle. I'd say it improves my anxiety by 20%.

NAC is readily available at vitamin/supplement suppliers, and is quite inexpensive when sourced there. It sounds like you got it in a literal prescription filled by a pharmacist. I can imagine that would have cost you dearly.

I had no idea that it had found a supporting role in mental health treatment. Here's a nice summary article for y'all.

I take 600 mg daily just because maintaining glutathione stores makes sense, IMHO. I think I'll boost my dose, after reading about the diverse health benefits arising from supplementation, not the least of which includes maintaining insulin sensitivity.

I would do a little more research about taking high amounts of NAC. There is some recent concern that it might promote certain cancers, including melanoma. The antioxidant properties of glutathione are such that too much of it protects cancer cells from their own free radicals.

Thanks, Scott. I saw that after I posted on this thread. I'm looking into it further.
