Best combo for Depression/Anxiety/Insomnia?

Posted by Agomelatinehope on September 14, 2012, at 19:27:12

Hi, I've just found out the great amount of natural remedies out there for treating these conditions. I've also read a lot of opinions and well, I'd like to give it a try since I'm tired of SSRIs and benzos...

I've just ordered:

-"Rhodiola Rosea" (To enhance mood)
-"Maca" (To enhance mood)
-"GABA" (To sleep at night)

I've seen other interesting products such as 5HTP, Holy Basil, L-Theanine, St. John's Wort, Bacopa, Omega 3, Resveratrol, or Ashwagandha.
I hope you can give me some advices or just make me know if any of you had any success with this kind of treatment.

How could I combine some of these products in a succesfull way to treat Depression/Anxiety/Insomnia?

Other effects I'm looking for are:

-Activation
-Motivation
-Sexual Desire
-Pro-social behavior
-Better quality sleep

Thank you very much

I do Orthomolecular Medicine myself. Try a b-100, several grams of C (time-release, 2 daily doses), either natural form E *or* tocotrienols (I'm using tocotrienols myself), and 3 grams niacinamide daily. Maybe throw in some zinc and selenium.

Thanks for your reply

So you think I could cope with Depression/Anxiety/Insomnia with that combination of vitamins?

(b100 complex+ C complex + Niacinamide + Tocotrienols)

Thanks again.

I take St. John's Wort, Fish Oil, Ginseng Complex and melatonin for depression & insomnia. Seems to be working for me. I would definitely try St. John's Wort for mood enhancement.

I can highly recommend Agar-35. It really works for anxiety and insomnia.

Orthomolecular medicine doesn't *exclude* pharmaceuticals from the line up. The goal is to use them at a minimum and possibly eliminate them eventually.

So, you might still need meds. First thing that popped in my head is that line up, plus 2-4 grams taurine, plus some Remeron at night time. Then mayb eliminate the pharmaceutical(s) later on. I just threw Remeron out there because its so sedting and helps some people.

Anyway, some newer OM line ups make heavy use of amino acids. I think Margot Kidder, the Canadian actress, uses lots of amino acids, but not so much the old school formula. Personally, I think the old school formula is where its at (worked for me..I knoow, aample of N=1, lol).

I can't *guarantee* that OM will help you AT ALL, but it does help me. Many of these vitamins--alone and in combos--help protect the brain. OM might help prevent TD in long-term neuroleptic treated patients. That's pretty cool.

I was thinking, for you...

2 dose time release C (I'd guess-timate 5-6 grams)+tocotrienols+taurine+niacinamide+b-100+----

---here's where I think the real genius comes in. Since you want to do this naturally, you can throw in some proven natural remedies for depression. OM is flexible. So, maybe, 5-HTP+Valerian (or passion flower) ?

The ones you listed are worth trying. Some of them can be very helpful. What is your diagnosis exactly? Before you take any supplements, it is necessary to know what your official diagnosis is.
For severe depression, you may need some kind of antidepressant medication or antidepressant like supplement, say St. John's Wort or SAM-e. Next, you need good nutrition, which means eating well, or if you don't eat well, then getting the whole range of vitamins and minerals will really help. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids can help as well. B vitamins, in the right dosages, are very helpful for depression. For anxiety, there are some herbs out there that can help. Avena sativa is good for nervous exhaustion. I take it everyday, and it doesn't seem to interact with my medication. Ashwaghanda might be good too, and to help with sleep. Minerals like magnesium and zinc might help a little with anxiety, but I don't think it is a cure. You need a balanced, holistic approach. Good nutrition, perhaps a little medication, vitamins and minerals, certain herbal tonics. I take GABA at night, and although it doesn't help me sleep by itself, I feel better the following day. A little melatonin, Vitamin E, and Vitamin B1 may help you sleep better, but there's no guarantee. There are a lot of reasons why people don't sleep well, and it's hard to say because there are numerous mental health conditions as well as tons of physical ailments that cause insomnia. You may need a sleep med like a lot of people. I know one thing that helped me sleep better---don't smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol excessively. Try and go to bed the same time every night, including the weekends. Your circadian rhythms will get used to a predictable schedule, and you may sleep better. I've heard Ashwaghanda may help with sleep. I've never had a lot of success with herbs, but I suppose this is one you could try. Also, drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed might help. For me, 1mg of melatonin, 200mg magnesium citrate(or glycinate), 400IU of natural vitamin E, 100mg of Vitamin B1, and 500mg of GABA is the concoction that helps me get a more restful sleep. There are some OTC sleep aids that have hit the market recently. You could try one of them too if the vitamins don't work. Benadryl can be used occasionally for sleep. It has diphenhydramine, an antihistamine. Also, a sleep machine with soothing sounds always calms me down. You need a quiet, dark, and cool place to sleep. Good luck!
